The 13th Annual Release Ritual

If your year has left you weary, wrung out, or weighted down, this is where you drop it.

For thirteen years, our community has come together at year’s end to release what no longer serves. To shake loose what’s been clinging. To cast into sacred flames everything we’re done carrying.

Whatever you’re ready to DROP, PUT DOWN, and WALK AWAY from goes into the fire…we banish it by burning it up.

This is the ancient art of banishing: the magical act of removing what is no longer needed. And fire has always been the element of choice for this kind of transformation.

On New Year’s Eve afternoon, I will gather the ingredients, woods carefully chosen, herbs selected for their transformative properties, sacred libations, and build a fire just for this purpose. Your petition, stating clearly what you are ready to release, will be offered to the bright flames along with everyone else’s.

It is simple and powerful magic—my favorite combination.

This ceremony includes a banishing blessing sent out to all participants. You will be held in this work, even from a distance.

Honoring the Wisdom Keepers

This year, I’m fulfilling a long-held intention: a portion of every Banish and Burn participation fee will support the Navajo Adopt an Elder program.

As we release what no longer serves and step toward renewal, we also honor the elders who hold ancestral wisdom. Many Navajo elders live in remote areas without electricity or running water, carrying traditional knowledge while facing material hardship. 

Through this ceremony, we practice what we preach: letting go to make space, and honoring what truly matters.

We are almost ready to journey fresh into a New Year, but before we do there is still one more piece of work to be done, one more load to be set down for good.

It is time to Banish and Burn.
