Neptune Retrograde

Foundations

I

In the ancient world there are moments in some of the better known stories and plays when the rivers begin to run backward. The seasoned reader knows that whenever that occurs something profound, and usually quite challenging, is about to happen. The event may be sudden but most often it is more gradual. The one sure thing is that once the rivers are running backward things are going to change and they won’t go back to the way things were before – they can’t. To my mind, this is an excellent illustration of what happens when the planet and holy helper Neptune goes retrograde.

First we must note that it is not uncommon for Neptune to spend as much or even more time retrograde as it spends moving directly. As one of the outermost planets its orbit is incredibly long and it takes its time moving through the sky – one of the aspects of this celestial helper we will return to in a moment. Neptune experiences a retrograde every year and that retrograde lasts between 6 and 7 months.

As I have written elsewhere, retrogrades of the outer planets are generally not believed to affect individuals as much as they are understood to give shape to global events. However, my personal and professional findings indicate something slightly different. What I have found is that we are all affected by outer planet retrogrades in different ways. There are those who can experience one outer planet retrograde and not even know that anything is happening. Those same people can experience another outer planet retrograde and be deeply affected by it. This speaks to something I have termed planet-sensitivities. We are especially sensitive to a planet when it is strongly aspected in our charts. So for instance, the planets that rule your Sun and Moon signs as well as your Ascendant, are all planets to watch. The planets that have strong aspects in your chart are also planets to pay attention to.

This means that when it comes to working with Neptune’s retrograde we have to look at both the global and potential personal effects.

Neptune is a planet strongly associated with the qualities of healing, spirituality, unconditional love, art and beauty, fantasy, romance, and the past. There is an otherworldly quality to Neptune (accentuated by the fact that the planet is retrograde for so long) that makes those born under its influence seem especially beautiful, magical, alluring, elusive, and also not quite of this world. The greatest challenge we find with the Neptunian flow is that of practical thinking and sound foundations. The visionary capacity we all possess is expanded by Neptune to a great degree but this is not the planet to remind us to put a foundation on those castles we have been building in the sky.

When Neptune retrogrades we collectively and globally have the opportunity to:

Review any fantasy-making that we have been engaged in and determine whether those fantasies can be turned into reality or whether they need to be banished altogether. Here we should think about collective fantasies that countries and nations are working with. Some endeavors may be called “fantastic” to deprive them of momentum and support while other agreements really are based on make-believe fantasy that needs to be sharply addressed and brought into line with reality.

Reflect on history, the mistakes, and the learnings from the past. Neptune’s retrograde can both encourage this reflection and also make it more difficult to glean the most useful insights from history. This is also a period of time when we may find our leaders or the leaders of other countries re-writing history to make it more acceptable or palatable.

Reconsider our attitudes towards healing. This includes mandates around health care and the status provided to health care providers, as well as access to basic necessities that promote health and healing worldwide. This period of time can also provide a useful review for new health and healing technologies and often the missing pieces that make such new methods possible are found during Neptune retrogrades.

Reengage global awareness around water and water rights. Water is the element of this planet and so issues around water and access to water are often first and foremost when we go into Neptune retrograde periods. Learning where your individual water comes from is a great start.

Refuse to dull our senses. Neptune’s influence can encourage more than one kind of fantasy making. Refusing to engage in fantasies that are harmful or going nowhere, refusing to let drugs, alcohol, or other poisons take precedent over what we collectively know to be good and healthy and useful, is a powerful move to make during Neptune Retrograde. We can also see the temptation to go in the opposite direction wax in strength during these periods. Staying sober, especially during these times, is the sound choice.

Re-investigate the stories that sound suspect. Neptune can bring the gifts of fiction into everyone’s life in positive and not so positive ways. Stories that sound suspect, dodgy, or have bad sources should be examined closely during these retrograde periods as their fault lines are most likely to show.

On a more personal level, when Neptune retrogrades we find that we are best able to:

Recommit to any artistic endeavor that is ready to be completed and shared with the world. This can also be a more general recommitting to your own personal creativity and the role that art plays in your life.

Re-examine any fantasies or delusions that are siphoning life force and vitality from you and giving nothing of real value back in return. (Obviously, if and when you identify them, you then banish them!) Pay special attention to the areas of love and money as Neptune retrogrades can really aggravate those two arenas.

Reflect on our own history, including our ancestors and our lineage, for valuable teachings. This is also an ideal time to do healing work on behalf of Ancestors and lineage.

Reconcile any deceptions we have been told or told ourselves with what is actually true. Neptune retrograde is an ideal time to “come clean”.

Recognize our capacity to be both healers and healed, and to work from a place of deep, abiding, and unconditional love.

Remember and work with our dreams and the wisdom they contain.

Neptune retrogrades are long periods of time, incredibly well-suited to sincere reflection. Work with this period of each year in a conscious and proactive manner in order to go deep and move the things that need to be moved with incredible swiftness. Neptune is not a speedy planet as we saw above, but it is deep and thorough, and the endeavors we take on under its auspices are endeavors that stay with us throughout our lives.

ear Miracles,

One of my dearest friends in the metaphysical world is Theresa Reed — she is a wise momma Tarot reader who is devoted to her clients, the art of tarot reading, and helping all of those interested in taking their Sacred Arts work to the next level find success and prosperity. Theresa and I recognized kindred spirits in each other right out the gate and this year we have partnered on our monthly Talking Shop Show — these shows are FREE and host a sizzling line up of guests — those who know me know that I only partner with people who are impeccable in their walk and integrity-Theresa is both!

In her own words:  Theresa Reed (alias: The Tarot Lady) is an intuitive Tarot reader, astrologist, teacher, mentor & yogi with over twenty years of professional experience, industry street cred for miles, and thousands of clients in her digital Rolodex. She’s devoted to helping people make better decisions & lead happier lives — using Tarot as an investigational tool for confident, bold & emotionally-intelligent action — in life, in love & in business. She is also the founder + leader of The Mystical Mogul Movement – a mission to help spiritual + metaphysical business owners get their sh*t together,  build strong + profitable empires, and experience the freedom they want + deserve.  Because running your own business is HOT — and even mystics gots to pay the bills.

Your home on the web is The Tarot Lady-tell us about The Tarot Lady-the name, the vision, the mission!

I have to laugh when I think of the very unoriginal way I came up with the name for my business.  I decided to go with The Tarot Lady because my clients would often tell me that they would think “I need to go see that tarot lady” when they were looking to book their appointments or coming to see me at a live event.  Sometimes they would remember me as “that tarot lady” versus my real name.

My mission is quite simple: helping people.  I’ve always been a “helper” personality as long as I can remember.  Pitching in, giving advice, solving problems – this has been my life path.  I’m a good listener and I’m also blessed with uncommonly good common sense and a killer connection to my intuition.  It’s through those skills that I try to assist people with their problems.  I also have a good sense of humor and one of my other not so secret missions is to get people to lighten up.  So often people take life way too seriously – I prefer a playful approach.  Helping people to learn to find the positive (even if only a positive lesson/takeaway from a situation) is also important to me.

My vision? I want to see people living consciously. I feel that one of the reasons why people have problems is because they do/say/choose things without thinking of the consequences.  And then they wonder why they are not happy/successful/fulfilled.  When you adopt a more contemplative mindset, you are more likely to make choices that support a happier life.  I am always trying to help people find that through my readings and classes.

You have so many wonderful offerings for your clients-one of the ones I love the most is a newer program, Mystical Mogul-tell me about this program-why you created it and who needs to have it now!

Mystical Mogul is a 25-day e-course for anyone who works in the metaphysical industry. It was developed because I’ve heard so many of my fellow mystics and healers complain that they struggle with their businesses. I’ve always assumed I was lucky in my business because I’ve been going strong for over 20 years – but what I realized was that I actually have some great business instincts which have contributed to my success. I wanted to share some of my best business tips with my tribe so that they can build sustainable and profitable businesses.

Whether you are a tarot reader, astrologer, Reiki healer, occult shop owner, massage therapist, yoga teacher, etc., you’ll find practical and completely doable tips that you can implement immediately to build your business. Plus it’s only $25!  That little investment may make a difference that pays for itself over and over and over again. Why not invest in your business and get some know-how from someone who’s been in your shoes and transcended the problems? It’s a no brainer!

One of the quotes on your site is…” the cards tell a story, but you write the ending…”-I LOVE this, tell me about your philosophy when it comes to tarot reading?

In my opinion, tarot is a practical tool that shows you where your path may lead and what obstacles you may encounter on the way.  It gives you a road map so that you can make more conscious decisions.  Nothing is ever written in stone – you are always the master of your destiny. Cards can show you the way but you always have the option to change things at any time you desire.

Sometimes people believe that they are “victims of fate” and they assume a tarot reading will spell out their entire destiny for them.  I believe that we are co-creators with the Universe and therefore, a reading can show you possible outcomes but you still steer the boat.  It’s about personal responsibility for the life you want rather than assuming you just get some “lot in life” and have to eat it.

Tarot CAN predict and often times remarkably so – but you know what?  Your own actions will predict far more.  I always like to say that the only person who will ever be 100% accurate for your life is YOU.

The feeling I get from much of your work is that you fuse what I think of as the intuitive arts with a very down-home, practical approach — how do intuition and practicality work together for you?

In my opinion, intuition is a practical skill.  I’m serious about that.  Your gut will often tell you if something is right or wrong.  Yet we tend to ignore it.  Why is that?  It’s often because our egos or our fears get in the way.  I’m not only a believer in trusting that spidey sense but I’m also a proponent of taking responsibility for your life.

You want a great life?  It requires work.  No one just inherits a fabulous existence.  It’s all about being true to yourself and making an effort.  I like to listen to my gut and then take the necessary actions to move my life forward – and that’s what I also try to do for my clients.

Sometimes I run into people who don’t want to do the work. They want a tarot reader to wave a magic wand and say that “Mr. Right will come into your life and you’ll live happily ever after” without you having to lift a finger.  If you want that kind of reading, I’m not your girl.  I’m here to look at possibilities and strategies so you can MAKE shit happen….not just sit around and hope for it.

If you could give one piece of wisdom to my readers today, what would it be?

It’s a piece of advice I give often: be better, not bitter. That means that no matter what your life has been up until now, make the most of it and keep going. Don’t look at your issues in an “I’m screwed” mindset. Start looking at what you can do to move forward in a positive manner. If you have the vision, the instinct, and the positive effort, you can create your own miracles.
