New Moon Blessing of Hands in Honor of Virgo

Lunar Letter

Dear Miracles,

September 1st ushers in a New Moon and Annular Solar Eclipse at 9 degrees Virgo, 4:04 AM cdt.

With all of the action in Virgo now is the perfect time to ask: What am I ready to devote myself to?

For me, I’m devoted to blessings. I favor a blessing much more than a piece of advice and I continue to feel thrilled and stunned at the brilliant, unique, one-of-a-kind ways that people find to bless each other.
New Moon Blessing for Virgo, September 2016

Blessed be your hands.

In whatever shape they might be in, however much they do or do not do every single day – let us take space now to bless them.

For they touch, and in touching they connect; in touching they heal.

For they hold, and in holding they fasten down what needs to be fastened down and let loose that which is ready to fly.

For they create, reaching all the way back through language and tongue and remembering that to create is simply to do…anything, as best we can.

For they are precious with their fluttering out palms, open like little satellite dishes taking in information from all directions, all places, all people.

For they carry scars and lines crisscrossing the wide and tender terrain of palm, speaking of journeys your people have traveled over and over again.

For they can curve inward making the strong, striking, fist that declares – here is where I stand and say, no more, enough is enough, be gone now.

For they are wildly colorful in their whites and blacks, browns, pinks, creams, reds, blues, purples, yellows, and greens, paint-spattered, carrying clay under the nail, ink-covered, tattooed by intention and happenstance.

For they can carry what needs to be carried and hold onto those who will carry you from time to time.

Blessed be your hands. Palm against palm, fingers tangled together speaking to each other once more before continuing on with their good work.

New Moon Notes: New Moon in Virgo

Lunar Letter

D

ear Miracles ~

The New Moon is in Virgo, which, among other things, guides how we create structures. One of the questions I am most frequently asked is how do I do everything that I do and still stay sane. Alas there is no one silver bullet solution that will work for everyone but here is how things work backstage at brianasaussy.com.

Slack – my team uses slack for all of our communication, which cuts down massively on emails. I love it because we can upload documents and images to share, create unique channels that are specific to our task list, and integrate it with tools like Zapier which is used to track sales and all kinds of other data points. Slack is amazing. After using all kinds of other project management platforms this is the one we love the best.

Calendly – when I switched my booking process over to Calendly I had so many of my clients email me and tell me that they were beyond the moon appreciative. Calendly is an elegant, simple, scheduling system that is beyond her friendly.

Aweber – all emails, all the time. Aweber is the service I use to keep my email lists organized, protected, and growing.

Evernote – I use Evernote to work with students, to keep track of all of my posts in canto, to write quickly to do lists and to store form letters, and that is really just the tip of the Evernote iceberg. Easy to share, include people in folders so that they have access to specific documents, upload images, voice recordings, and with their suite of features like Pocket, I also have a continually growing archive of articles and images that are related to my work.

WordPress – Best website platform hands down.

Dropbox – We use Dropbox to store, send, and communally access and edit all kinds of files.

Audio Acrobat – Complete web-based storage and audio recording services.

Hootesuite – Best interface we have found for seeing and scheduling various social media shout outs.

Pinterest – I LOVE Pinterest and use it to track the people, places, and things that inspire me. I also store public domain images in Pinterest that I might use for canto posts or lunar letters and we have several community boards for students in my various programs.

Spotify – Music is essential in doing my best work. Sometimes I like absolute silence but when I don’t I go to one of my Spotify playlists.

If you run a small business and the ideas of balance sheets and PnL’s make your head spin, you need to visit with Jessica, asap.

There are two other groups that make my work hum, sing, and dance. They have dedicated souls who work with me for at least a year and often for much longer. They ARE the Sacred Arts community and they teach me more about what really matters than I will ever teach them. They are my: Miracle Tree students and Spinning Gold students.

The Dream beneath the Dream

Lunar Letter

Shoes inscribed with sacred symbolsUnda Wata Man’s Shoes” by Tosha Grantham (Translation: “Shoes for Walking in a Parallel Universe”)

T

hese magical shoes would be worn by a sacred artist who is going into the liminal, walking between the worlds. This is often how it goes with our dreams too…there is the dream we know, the dream we easily perceive, and then there is the dream that is part of the “otherword”, the hidden realm where we need more than the five senses to apprehend — we need hearts and minds and hands willing to look harder, willing to dig deeper.

As many of my longtime readers know, I was raised within a magical family, but I had no intention of becoming a professional sacred artist. In fact, I was all about law, and throughout high school won award after award in speech and cross-examination debate. I had my entire future neatly mapped out: scholarship for pre-law at UT? Check. Followed by law school at a top tier school? Check. Followed by hours and hours spent immersed in constitutional law? Check, check and check.

I cannot tell you how grateful I am that things turned out otherwise.

It started when I got sick the winter between my junior and senior year. Very sick. Underweight and bed-ridden for pretty much my entire Winter break. It was clear to me then that while my mind had decided on the dream I was going to pursue, my body had other ideas, and one way or another I was going to have to listen. It was clear that even at the high school level the kind of intensity required by my chosen field was not going to work for me physically. I knew it would only get worse in college and then again as a full-fledged lawyer. So the question became…why do I really want to do these things? If this is my dream, I said to myself, then what is the dream beneath that dream?

Stories like mine are not uncommon, and I actually got off pretty light. More devastating is the young dancer who discovers she has a stress fracture in her spinal column and cannot dance professionally anymore, ever. Or the athlete who has pinned all her hopes for the future on a college scholarship that never quite comes through. The surgeon who is hit by a drunk driver and no longer has the extremely fine motor control his craft requires. These stories sound dramatic, but they happen every day to people just like you, just like me.

More common still is the person who is waiting for just the right job, opportunity, amount of money, level of skill or security to do what they have always really wanted to do. All too often we spend our lives waiting for a moment that never arrives because it never existed in the first place. There is no perfect time, there is no perfect moment. There is what you have and who you are, right now, today. That formula possesses all the magic you need to do what you really want to do, to be who you really want to be.  If, that is – and this is the tricky part – if, you are willing to ask…what is the dream beneath my dream?

So it is that the dancer dances for the beauty and grace of Dance — and there are many, many ways to be for the dance. The athlete is in it for Victory, and victory comes in many different forms. The surgeon? The surgeon heals — that is why they do what they do, and there are many ways to bring about healing. The girl who loved law and debate? She loves to help people by making complicated ideas simple and understandable, so she became a teacher.

And what about you? Under this full moon in Virgo — the sign that sings of devotion and excellence in craft and living — what is the dream beneath your dream? If you dream of a million dollars ask yourself why? If you dream of being self-employed and setting your own schedule, ask why? If you dream of the day when you don’t have this job, that lover, or this apartment ask…why? What is the dream beneath your dream – the real dream?  If we can name it, then we can call it into being, we can begin to live it, right now, today.

The Introverted Aries & other Astrological Anomalies

Divination and Dreams

D

ear Miracles,
An introverted Aries.
A Taurus who is chatty.
A shy Gemini.
Cancers that never dream.
A Leo who prefers to be NOT in the spotlight.
Disorganized Virgos.
The Libran who doesn’t get along…with anyone.
Mainstream Scorpios.
The Sagittarius who likes to stay home.
Capricorns who aren’t competitive.
Aquarians who are decidedly not social.
Loud-mouth Pisceans.

Sure, these are not the typical descriptions for each sun sign, but I have met folks who fit with each description. I’m often told by a client…this is my sun sign, but it doesn’t fit me, I’m nothing like that! Maybe so and maybe no. The whole point of astrology, really the whole point of any sacred art, is that we are not reducible. We cannot be reduced to our genes, our address, our education, our family, our talents or our weaknesses.

The whole is always greater than the parts.

That’s what astrology teaches. So does tarot. Both disciplines should encourage an aerial view…one that opens up and expands on possibilities, not a view that leaves you feeling trapped in a category that doesn’t work and doesn’t resonate.

More love.

More possibility.

More promise.

Never less.

Make Mercury (Retro) work for you!

Divination and Dreams

D

ear Miracles: Mercury in Retrograde is here! It is that crazy time of year when the wee planet Mercury appears to be going backwards in its elliptical orbit. It is not actually retrograding but from our vantage point it sure looks like it! And Mercury in Retrograde is probably THE most infamous astrological event because Mercury is a small but mighty planet — he rules, among other things, our ability to communicate clearly, think smart, make good deals, and the general area of technology. When a retrograde happens to say the least, it is easy for things to go on the fritz!

Mercury in retrograde is actually a time of year that I really typically enjoy. I mean sure, there is always a repair that has to happen or a technical snafu, but I go into the season EXPECTING those events. If you are like me there is always a project or two that you started that is still hanging around in a half completed state. While Mercury retrograde is not a great time to begin new projects it is a superb time to bring old projects to a close. Paying attention to the zodiac sign that the retrograde occurs in brings a certain level of nuance to each retrograde phase. Consider what particular sets of strengths and weaknesses the sign Mercury is transiting brings to the cosmic table and then think about ways to practically maximize the benefits in your own life.

While traveling during retrograde is not the best idea, considering the way we travel-and if you are a frequent traveler-organizing and streamlining the process for yourself is a great way to take advantage of this time. In fact, the simple rule of thumb is that any activity that begins with an “re” is an appropriate retrograde activity, this includes: reassessing, remembering, recollecting, repairing, responding (to letters and emails), reorganizing, and reconciling!

Always exercise common sense during a retrograde — a bunch of my lovely lady clients always feel the need to start pressuring their significant others into stronger commitment or marriage. This is probably not the best time to do that since feelings can get hurt and intense conversations can go south quickly. Back up your computer, make sure your phones are charged and plugged in.

If you start to feel itchy, twitchy, unfocused, or like you might bite someone’s head off–take a breath, go for a walk, clear your head and then return to it. Pick an organizing/cleaning/de-cluttering project a few weeks before the retrograde actually hits and you will be in awesome shape!

How to work a Void of Course Moon

Divination and Dreams

D

ear Miracles: We are coming off a Void of Course Moon in Virgo and I thought it would be a good time to say a few words about what exactly a Void of Course Moon is and how you can work most effectively with it. The Moon is considered “void of course” after it passes the last planet in a given sign and is on its lovely way to the next sign in the zodiacal wheel. So, for instance, since yesterday (1/20/14) the Moon has been Void of Course in the sign of Virgo and around 5pm my time today it will have its first aspect in the sign of Libra officially ending the Void of Course time period.

The Moon goes Void of Course pretty often and these periods can be longish, in the neighborhood of one to two days, or they can be quite brief. When considering how to work with a Void of Course Moon, I usually recommend that folks treat this period in a similar fashion to a Dark Moon. Void of Course moons are small but intense moments when we have the opportunity to engage in deep self-care which really translates to paying attention to what is working and is not working in our lives. It is almost like a Celestial magnifying glass is handed to you but of course you get to decide whether to make use of the time or not.

This IS a time when big movements or decisions can happen — in most presidential elections one party has chosen their nominee during a Void of Course moon (and typically that nominee loses). The first pictures of space were taken during a Void of Course Moon, and generally speaking your psychic senses come out more strongly during this time. Keep on the lookout for negative or unhelpful patterns of thought/speech/behavior as well since they also tend to make cameos during this time.

When considering what ritual vibe is most appropriate for a given Void of Course Moon look at the sign that it is in. For me, with the Moon Void of Course in Virgo, I have been making lists about what needs to be cleaned and organized in my home in preparation for the upcoming Mercury in Retrograde we will all delight in come February. The sign and house that the Moon has gone Void of Course in points the way for magical work during this time and any work you do can yield long-term and lasting results!

Celestial Happenings-Sun in Pisces, Moon in Virgo, Mercury in Retrograde-oh my!

Divination and Dreams

D

ear Miracles: When I opened my inbox yesterday I had an unusual event — client after client was sad, frustrated, and confused. Feeling all of these…feelings, and yes unable to communicate them! It was just a whole big mess! On Monday I wrote about healing a broken heart — somewhat presciently I suppose. (Imagine that!) And as I heard the sad stories I paused, looked up at the sky, squinted my eyes and nodded sagely. I know what’s going on (or at least part of it) and I thought I would share it with you.

1.) Sun moved into Pisces — yesterday 2/18/13 at 6:02 am central time to be precise. Pisces is the sign of FEELING! Most of my readers know that I am married to a Pisces, my little boy is a Pisces, and my ascendent is also in Pisces. So I am somewhat of an expert.

The heavenly manifestation of Pisces occurs through art, music, dreams, and salvation. Pisces is here to synthesize and to save.

The hellish aspects of Pisces deals with escapism, addiction, imprisonment, and styling oneself as a victim. It’s easy for Pisces to be pushovers and get themselves into tangled nets then feel sorry for themselves without reflecting on how their actions contributed to their state of unhappiness.

The mode of Pisces is feeling. The fish feels deeply, completely, and in some cases overwhelmingly. No matter where Pisces is in your own natal chart, this emotional, feeling, creative energy is around all of us right now making us feel a bit softer and more open-a bit more raw, but also more honest.

2.) Mercury goes into retrograde on 2/23. I have written extensively about how to rock this period here — but given the Sun in Pisces, this Mercury in Retrograde promises to be especially tender. Remember, Mercury in Retrograde is a time when we refine, revise, and pay attention to loose ends. The loose ends in this case may be our deep feelings, dreams, and fragile hopes. The theme I am giving this period is seeking greater connection and understanding of the deep self.

3.) Full Moon in Virgo — tomorrow I will send out a newsletter with all the goodies about the upcoming full moon in Virgo. You can sign up here.

Generally speaking all the messiness of Sun in Pisces and Mercury in retrograde can lead to some amazing and deep insights that will feed your soul for the rest of the year. The full moon in Virgo is a wonderful way to represent those reminders to yourself and to create structures around them so that you may honor them more fully. Por example: if you realize that you quitting cello lessons was one of the biggest mistakes ever during this time, then the full moon in Virgo might be the perfect time to start lessons back up and pop them into your calendar.

Finally, I’ll leave you with a poem/prayer from Emily Dickinson-who captures the season moment so beautifully:

A light exists in Spring

Not present in the Year

At any other period—

When March is scarcely here

A Color stands abroad

On Solitary Fields

That Science cannot overtake

But Human Nature feels.

It waits upon the Lawn,

It shows upon the furthest Tree

Upon the furthest Slope you know

It also speaks to you.

Then as Horizons step

Or Noons report away

Without the Formula of soun

It passes and we stay—

A quality of loss

Affecting our Content

As Trade had suddenly encroached

Upon a Sacrament.
