Share A Little Magic. Win Something Big!

Alchemy and Magic

M

iracles,

A few days ago, I shared what the word magic means to me.

To me, magic is anything you do to make everyday life feel a little more extraordinary. Magic is ritual and ceremony, yes. But magic is also the celebrations of birthdays and anniversaries, quiet moments of reflection, rites of passage like graduate, periods of meditation and prayer.

Magical moments are found in all places. Light a candle in honor of someone you have lost, writing down all the reasons why you are still angry with your ex and then burning the paper, censing your home with your favorite incense or spritzing it with room spray, making a birthday cake for your child, taking a bath with your beloved, rolling around with your dog, and planting seeds before a storm hits…magic comes in many forms.

To celebrate the release of my book Making Magic, I have an invitation for you…and yes of course there will be fabulous prizes!!!

Read on for instructions…

Step 1: Experience a magical moment for yourself. Any type of moment. Big. Small. Doesn’t matter. Light a candle. Cense a room. Draw a hot bath. Journal after dropping the kids off at school. Pull a tarot or oracle card. Anoint your front door with a blessing oil. Make a circle of salt. Feed the birds. Sprinkle petals on your bed. Leave a love note in your child’s lunchbox. Put a crystal in the windowsill so that it catches the light. Let yourself be quiet. Dance. Sing. Make a fire. Say a prayer. Make whatever magic you feel called to make.

Step 2: Take a photo of that magical moment.

Step 3: Post your photo online somewhere. Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, your blog, anywhere you want — and say, “This was the most magical moment of my day”, or “Finding the extraordinary in the everyday”, or “Today I wanted to make some magic”, or something along those lines. (Want to write a little more? Want to share why this moment was so magical for you? Go for it! Write as much or as little as you want.)

Step 4: In your post please mention somewhere that this post was inspired by a new book: Making Magic and please include the #makingmagicbook and #BrianaSaussy hashtags and this link for ordering the book.

Step 5: Get your post up before midnight (central time) on June 3rd, 2019. Email a link to bri@brianasaussy.com and then you are all done!

Now the really fun part…the prizes!

I will read every single post (I can’t wait to see them!) and I’ll choose 7 people who will win some awesome prizes.

Grand Prize: A year of Lunar Lights and a one hour Sacred Arts Session with me.

Additional Prizes include: signed copies of my book, 3-question tarot readings delivered via email, a 20 minute audio recording focused on a specific area of your natal chart, and a devotional candle dressed, blessed, and set on your behalf.

Thank you for making magic in your life — and helping to spread the word about my book at the same time. Double magic!

I cannot wait to see your photos. I know they will be so moving, tender, and sweet. I see a lot of happy sighs and squeals, and probably some tears too in my near future!

Never forget my loves – you are magic.

What IS Magic Anyway?

Alchemy and Magic

M

iracles,

So what IS magic anyway?

I am asked this question all of the time.

The word magic gets thrown around more now than ever – it is hot, on point, on trend.

And, like most things that are hot, on point, and on trend, the essential meaning can easily be overlooked, ignored or lost.

What are we talking about when we talk about magic?
What are we experiencing when we experience magic?

OK…I am going to define it for you…ready?!

Just kidding.

Of course, I am not going to define what magic is for you.

In my book, I never define what magic is. This is not a hedge on my part. I cannot define what magic is because above all else magic is relational.

I would be as successful at defining it for you as I would be in defining the partner you have chosen to spend your life with, the children you have raised, or the creatures you have loved and lived with.

Every single one is particular and unique – a potent mix of alchemy that cannot be replicated in any lab no matter how well equipped. The same is true about magic. It is a relationship between you and the extraordinary…the only way for you to get to know it is to get to know it.

Along those lines…I will be making a special announcement in the next few days about a fun way to help us do exactly that – get to know our own unique magic. It will be fun, exciting, and totally free.

How I Really Wrote My Book (and how you can too)!

Sacred Arts

M

iracles,

Have you ever found yourself wondering how people get started writing? I used to think about this all of the time. I wondered if an amazingly impressive literary agent or angel of writing came down from the heavens and bopped people on the head with a magical wand pronouncing “You are now a writer!”

In reality, I have found it is a lot more like what Amanda Palmer says all artists have to do: make our own fairy wands and then hit ourselves on the heads with them – not once, but many, many times declaring:
“I’m an artist!” Bop! “I’m an artist!” Bop!

Certainly, that has been my experience. And as I have talked to some best-selling authors I have learned that is their experience too – no one told them they were gifted or special or unique – they just got to work and wrote. They got rejected. They wrote some more. Got rejected some more. Kept writing. Kept on. Simple. Not easy.

That’s the thing with writing. If you want to write then you have to actually write. You may very well need to mark out time on your calendar, hang up a do not disturb sign if need be, even leave your house or office and go down the street to a cafe so that you can write. I do it every day. Now that I am between books I have returned to some of my most basic writing practices (my favorite approach to writing btw comes from Natalie Goldberg whose work is just incredible and very straightforward), and it feels so good to return to those basics and reaffirm my commitment to writing.

However, I have also had a secret weapon in my writing ventures – one that absolutely made my book possible and that has been a guiding hand in my writing for years – and that my friends are good editors.

A good editor is someone who is not just going to check your work for punctuation errors. They are going to help you think through your work from the foundations to the ultimate vision and then support you in articulating those visions in the best possible way. They show up with a light hand and organize your writing so that it is structurally sound, has good flow, and is delivered in your unique and one of a kind voice. They hold your hand, check your sources, and make sure you are using the right attributions. They are your research assistants and guardians of your sacred voice…these are just some of the things that a good editor does.

When I wrote Making Magic I was blessed to have a wonderful editor from my publisher Sounds True – but before my manuscript ever went to the publisher I had an in-house editor: my amazing husband David, whose credentials include years of teaching high school English and Philosophy. (Trust me, if the man can get a bunch of jock kids to see the brilliance of Jane Austen, he can help you deliver your best writing yet).

David has decided to make his editorial services publicly available. I am not sure about this as the selfish part of me wants to keep my secret writing mojo all to myself, but then the not-terrible part of me wants to be generous and share…it’s a conundrum!

Bottom line: I want the best for our community and when it comes to messaging clarity, delivery, and refinement, David Saussy is the best.

My love does not have a fancy website or marketing spiel – he likes to get to work, not talk about getting to work.

He is currently booked with writing projects through July of this year, but if you are interested in talking to someone who has real editorial gifts about your own writing projects and endeavors then get in touch with him at saussydavid@gmail.com

Discovering Your Soul Soil – An Active Imagination Journey complementing Chapter One of Making Magic.

Alchemy and Magic

M

iracles,

In an hour and change, we will be celebrating the New Moon in Taurus! This is a great moon to do some wealth and money magic, to join Bull Strong if you have not already done so, and to clean out and bless your wallet. Here is a prayer story I wrote for this New Moon a couple of years ago.

It is ALSO a wonderful and auspicious time to garden, go outside, and bless your place and the creatures that share space with you.

Along those lines, I am very happy to introduce you to the first installation of Making Magic | Taking AIM. This is a series of Active Imagination Meditations (AIM) that complement each chapter of my book, Making Magic.

This first meditation is an exploration of the wildest and precious land you will every encounter – your own soul soil – and complements the first chapter of the book.

Listen to it here.

Hearth and Home Vol. 12 These Things Will Change

Lineage and Legacy

L

ast October, my friend Danielle came to my home to take photos for my business and my family. One of the great things about having a professional photographer come into your space is that she will see things you might otherwise miss. Turns out I’ve been missing a lot!

Danielle gathered bunches of beautiful shots, including the unlikeliest — for example, our corner shelf which sits right by the piano (pictured above). This is the shelf where we drop our coats and jackets, bags, and purchases, and where we leave our shoes upon entering the home. It is not unusual to find an assortment of baby gear and toys, school papers, sports equipment, and a magical spray or two tucked into it this way and that. Danielle saw it and immediately captured it on film because as she said “This is precious. These things will change.” She went on to explain that the way that the corner shelf looked on that day in October will be radically different from the way it looks next year at the same time.

I’ve returned to this observation in the months since Danielle first made it because I find it to be such a potent reminder — these things will change. Big things change, as we know. We find new jobs, new lovers, we get married and go through divorces, we get sick, we heal, maybe we have children, eventually those children grow up, our dog dies, a little kitten decides we are their forever person…we’ve all experienced these types of changes. But in the background, humming away, are constant, much more subtle changes that, when properly grasped, can show us the progression of our stories with great detail. If we pay attention, we can find places that bear witness to these small changes. Becoming aware of and finding those places is one of the reasons I wrote Making Magic in the first place. They are often not the obvious places where you think alchemical transformation might happen: they are part of the every day – your closet, your morning cup of coffee, your front door, your corner shelf.

When it comes to magic, we tend to focus on the big stuff, the significant life changes. We seek ways to slow them down or speed them up, to get them jump started or to stop them altogether. In short, we often come to magic as a way of managing the big shifts and changes in our lives. When we approach magic in this way and pair it with wisdom and discernment we can experience awe-inspiring results. But seasoned soulful seekers look closer and go deeper, understanding as they do that the real sauce of magic happens not in the big moments and rituals and ceremonies but in the everyday knowledge that these things, all of these things, will change.

A trite saying is that every change carries with it an opportunity. I prefer to think that every change is an offering, cosmic hands stretched out holding a variety of choices and asking simply: What will you do today? Who will you be? How will you show up? Those options…and the ability to choose the best ones — that too is magic, some of the strongest that I know.

Some of the changes we have been experiencing in Casa de Saussy include:
Heath is this close to crawling!
Jasper loves playing basketball and Bach.
My book, Making Magic, is now available to pre-order and you can snag some lovely bonuses when you do so.
One of those bonuses, an audio recording of me reading the guiding story from the book was sound engineered by David (my beloved) who did an incredible job and delivered something fresh and gorgeous.
There are lots of new blog posts up at canto – some are talking about the upcoming Mercury Retrograde in the sign of Pisces that starts on March 5th and others teach rituals for having a healthier relationship to social media.
We are all obsessing over this album and I am loving this song which my husband introduced me to.

May you have a gorgeous New Moon in Aquarius and whatever else you choose – choose to be blessed and a blessing in turn.
