Star Stories: August 2020

Ceremony and Ritual

A

strology for August 2020

Note for August: This month starts and ends with weeks that are packed with celestial weather and in between those two the seas a relatively calm with a few exceptions.

8/1: Blessed Lammas!!!

8/1: Mercury opposed to Pluto. Be extra careful of trying to get your way by any means necessary with this astrology and be extra careful of people trying to get their way with your through deception and/or manipulation.
Ask: Where do things feel less than forthright?

8/3: Full Moon at 11 degrees Aquarius, 10:59 AM. Some ideas for how to work with the Full Moon can be found here: https://brianasaussy.com/how-to-honor-the-full-moon/ and here: https://brianasaussy.com/six-months-of-magic-every-full-moon/
Ask: What community am I seeking out?

8/3: Sun square Uranus. This aspect can have a lot of restless energy bubbling up to the surface and the best thing to do is move your body with it. But, do exercise caution because Uranus can always bring the unexpected and sometimes a dangerous situation.
Ask: What needs to move?

8/3: Mercury opposed to Saturn. This opposition can make you feel like you are just spinning your wheels and getting no where fast. You can align with it by not trying to overly verbally communicate and instead by making plans and sussing out the best structure for your current project.
Ask: Where would I benefit from more thinking and less speaking?

8/4: Mercury moves into Leo. For the next three weeks communication is quick, fiery, funny, and a bit dramatic. You will definitely have opinions that you want to share during this transit.
Ask: What opinions am I ready to express?

8/4: Mars square Jupiter. This is actually a positive square that brings luck and opportunity to those willing to hustle for it!
Ask: What opportunity am I ready to seize?

8/7: Venus moves into Cancer. Venus in Cancer is all about home, family, children, food, and real estate. Privacy and security issues often loom large with this transit as we become especially loving and nurturing of our tribe.
Ask: How can I best protect and support my people?

8/11: Waning Quarter Moon at 19 degrees Taurus, 11:45 AM. Reminder that this is a great time to banish: https://brianasaussy.com/what-are-you-really-banishing/
Ask: Where do I need to banish laziness or sloth?

8/13: Mars square Pluto. This aspect has the potential to be violent and/or dangerous. Watch yourself and do not put yourself in harm’s way. Keep communications kind and do not engage in adversarial situations today.
Ask: Where do I need to simply wait it out?

8/15: Uranus Retrograde. Retrograde begins at 9:25 AM and stations direct on January 14th at 2:36 AM.
Ask: What needs to be shaken up in my life and what needs to be settled back down?

8/16: Sun trine Mars. This aspect gives us a ton of energy, makes us feel sexy, and has us all working to live our best lives.
Ask: What do I want to celebrate?

8/17: Mercury trines Mars. It is now time to make plans and optimize all the things. That is the gift of a trine between Mercury and Mars. Well, that and the fact that you have the energy and discipline to implement the changes you want to make!
Ask: What plans am I ready to make?

8/18: New Moon at 26 degrees Leo at 9:42 PM. Here are Four Ways to Honor the New Moon just in case you missed them: https://brianasaussy.com/4-ways-honor-new-moon/
Ask: What new luxury am I ready to embrace?

8/19: Mercury moves into Virgo. Mercury loves to be in this sign! Now is the time to get your house in order as the summer begins to come to a close. Paying the bills, making the doctor appointments, and cleaning off your altars never felt so good! Great time for writing, publishing, and speak as well!
Ask: What am I devoted to right now?

8/22: Sun enters Virgo 10:45 AM
Ask: What is holy for me?

8/24: Mars square Saturn. Things are just not going to move the way we want them to today so it would be better to stop trying so hard and celebrate a tiny win, make a check list (to honor the Sun in Virgo) or plant something in your garden.
Ask: Where do I need to let go?

8/25: Waxing Quarter at 13 degrees Sagittarius, 10:10 PM. This is the perfect time to brush up on your divination practice! https://brianasaussy.com/teaching/20-question-tarot/
Ask: What travels am I ready to undertake?

8/25: Mercury trine Uranus. This aspect brings out great ideas, brilliant insights, and all kinds of magical communications. Great day for writing, publishing, book proposals, public speaking gigs, and communications in general.
Ask: What insights are making themselves known to me?

8/25: Venus opposed to Jupiter. This aspect makes us feel like anything is possible but can also leave us procrastinating and/or not willing to do the work to make the possible happen.
Ask: Where would my big dream benefit from the concrete effort?

8/27: Venus trine Neptune. Right now we are all about positive thinking that verges into not helpful fantasy land. If this day has you thinking that things are not really that bad or hard you may need to check yourself and take off those rose-colored glasses.
Ask: Where am I kidding myself?

8/29: Mercury trine Jupiter. This trine is about as positive as it gets. Apply it to the areas of life that seem particularly sticky and tricky and you will be amazed with what emerges for you!
Ask: What areas of my life could use some brilliant positive thinking?

8/30: Venus opposed to Pluto. This aspect can go one of two ways. You can see your wounds and hurts with love and compassion and bring some beautiful healing to them, or you can go off in the direction of Glenn Close in Fatal Attraction. I think you know what needs to happen, yeah?
Ask: Where would an old hurt benefit from some compassion and grace?     August August August

Star Stories: July 2020

Ceremony and Ritual

A

strology for July 2020

Note for July: Mercury turns direct and a trio of Sun oppositions give us the flavor for July which is festive, forward-facing, and overall moving in a positive direction despite a few snags here and there. This month also holds a few moments where truly deep healing can occur.

7/1: Saturn retrogrades out of Aquarius and back into Capricorn. This is Saturn’s last hurrah in its home turf of Capricorn until it returns in about 30 years. Any final lessons that you have been working on under the guidance of Saturn for the past two years come home to you in the deepest way between now and December 17th.
Ask: What disciplines do I need to review?

7/4: Full Moon + Lunar Eclipse at 13 degrees Capricorn, 11:55 PM. Some ideas for how to work with the Full Moon can be found here: https://brianasaussy.com/how-to-honor-the-full-moon/ and here: https://brianasaussy.com/six-months-of-magic-every-full-moon/
Ask: What mastery should be celebrated?

7/4: Lunar Eclipse at 13 degrees Capricorn at 11:44 PM
Ask: Where am I resistant to developing mastery?

7/8: Mercury square Mars. This aspect reminds all of us – if you cannot say something nice then don’t say anything at all!
Ask: Where do I need to remain quiet?

7/12: Waning Quarter Moon at 3 degrees Aries, 10:24 PM. A reminder that this is a great time to banish: https://brianasaussy.com/what-are-you-really-banishing/
Ask: What weapons am I ready to put down?

7/12: Mercury Direct!!!

7/12: Sun trine Neptune. This is a lovely and gentle aspect that makes us all feel kinder towards each other. You may find that this day feels like everything is aligning just as it should and it is an especially auspicious day to donate to a charitable cause.

7/14: Sun opposed to Jupiter. New opportunities beckon but staying realistic about chances and probabilities is key.
Ask: What previously unseen opportunity is asking for my attention?

7/15: Sun opposed to Pluto. This opposition highlights the places where you have knowingly or unknowingly restricted yourself when it comes to healing and personal power. At its best these places are illuminated and freed up so that you can work with them in a healthy manner.
Ask: What old wound is ready to be fully seen?

7/20: New Moon at 28 degrees Cancer, 12:33 PM. Here are Four Ways to Honor the New Moon just in case you missed them: https://brianasaussy.com/4-ways-honor-new-moon/
Ask: What home am I ready to create?

7/20: Sun opposed to Saturn. This opposition can leave us feeling like no matter how hard we try, we are never going to really get what we want. Take a breath and acknowledge that this is a moment in the story, not the entire story.
Ask: What would happen if I let go?

7/22: Sun enters Leo 3:37 AM
Ask: What do I roar for?

7/27: Waxing Quarter at 14 degrees Scorpio, 12:31 PM. This is the perfect time to brush up on your divination practice! https://brianasaussy.com/teaching/20-question-tarot/
Ask: What mystery am I ready to explore? July

Crisis Means You Have To Choose

Divination and Dreams

M

iracles, crisis

If there is a word that describes 2020 thus far it is the word crisis.

From Coronavirus to the economy, to the murder of George Floyd and the protests his killing has sparked, we have as a country and a world moved from crisis to crisis this year without taking a breath – and it’s only June.

There is no one I have talked to that is fine with it all, no one that is doing OK, no one that is unaffected. But I have noticed one group of people who are doing better than most.

I had started noticing them in mid March when we were in the throes of shelter in place orders and praying that our hospitals would not be overwhelmed. Those of you that I work with regularly have heard me mention this group as many of you claim membership in it. I have continued watching them through the protests, the demonstrations, and the grief, division, and hoped-for reconciliation that underlies it all.

Who are these people?

Survivors.

They are the members of our community that have survived trauma and abuse, long term illnesses, systemic oppression, domestic violence, drugs, and alcohol and they are the ones to watch right now.

This is ironic. How many of you, beautiful survivors, have I talked with and you have shared with me how, when the world seems sane and “normal” you feel anything but? My survivors tell me how they feel like such a hot mess all the time, how their inability to get it together, or keep it together (or at least fake it well enough to pass) has lost them jobs, relationships, and all kinds of opportunities on a regular basis.

Now look at you. The world is literally on fire in more than one quarter, it is burning. And yes, you are all affected by it, of course, you are, and yes, you are triggered by it, of course, you are, but you are also steady, calm, unwavering.

You, Survivors, are steering your ships with steady hands while others are flailing about and capsizing multiple times – why is this?

I think it’s because you know. You know these waters, you know what this part of the ocean holds. We are in crisis and you know, more than anyone else, what comes next because you have lived it.

Crisis.

I’ve written about this word before. Its ancient Greek root means “Crossroads” – its the place where we leave offerings to the Gods, where destinies are assigned, where you meet Old Scratch, and if he deems you worthy pick up no mean talent and the possibility of fame. The crossroads are where fate shows up because it is here we make our choices. For that is what crisis means, you have to choose.

This road or that.
Freedom or oppression.
Justice for all or justice for no one.
Standing together or falling apart.
Saving lives or taking them.

You have to choose.

Survivors know this. They survived because they got to the crossroads, knee deep in crisis, and they made a choice. To walk away, to confront and vanquish, to take the help, make the call, to dream of something better. Survivors know that crisis means you have to choose but they also know something more about the nature of choice itself.

Choice is not just about me, my wants, my desires, or thoughts or dreams. The choices I make are about my people and so they honor or dishonor my Ancestors, help or harm my fellow men and women, and creatures, they bless or curse my children. Every choice. There is not a lot riding on how we choose, there is everything riding on it.

Here is another thing Survivors know – trite but true: the only way out is through. No one gets to skip this part, no one gets to pick their road without first dealing a hand and getting one dealt at the crossing.

Ask any woman who has given birth and she will tell you about the moment when she hits the way and would strike any deal or make any bargain to turn that train around. But she can’t, she won’t, and she doesn’t because the fact is my loves, life demands our choosing again and again.

So we are in crisis, that’s the terrain right now. What is required is that we make a choice and choose well.

Onward, together.

Bri

How to Work With a Planet As It Changes Signs

Learning and Community

M

iracles, changes

When a planet changes signs it is *always* an opportunity to create and participate in deep magic. The planets of our solar system each hold world making/ world destroying energy and it is not coincidental that they were named for some of the greatest Gods in our classical lineage.

It is easy to lose sight of this in the day to day grind of things and also in the irreverent trivializing that many of these Gods have experienced throughout time. Nevertheless, that GIANT energy is still there.

In old school Astrology as in old school magic (coming mainly out of a European with some Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, and Asian influences), the planets, like all Holy Helpers were to be controlled and mastered and made do one’s bidding.

Which hopefully by now we can all agree is beyond ludicrous.

In other, older systems the understanding is different. It is one of relationship, RIGHT relationship, and alignment. And every celestial event is an opportunity to LEARN something about not only ourselves but the greater world and to TRANSFORM an aspect of our lives and also how we show up in the world. (Because THAT is also the best and most direct route to transforming the world itself, yes?)

Now the inner planets (Mercury, Venus, Mars, Sun, and Moon – which are considered planets in most star stories world over) are fast-moving and change signs very quickly.

The understanding here is that in many ways we too change quickly and these planets are excellent to become friends with and get to know when we are in need of SWIFT intervention/aid/transformation.

The outer planets do not move so fast. Jupiter stays in a single sign for about a year. Saturn stays in a sign for over 2 years. The outer planets are understood as cosmic forces that do their work SLOWLY and THOROUGHLY. They prefer long-term commitments and relationships where we show up consistently. And as we know, showing upstarts with PAYING ATTENTION.

So…I am telling you now that Saturn is going to change signs this month.

On March 21st it moves from Capricorn – where it has been hanging out for over 2 years, to Aquarius. This first move is akin to dipping our toes into the pool. Saturn will retrograde out of Aquarius in the Summer and then return for good to this sign in the Winter of 2020.

I am telling you because I would very much like you to think about Saturn and think about Aquarius BEFORE you read a bunch of things that tell you what to think.

This is because, as always the best medicine and magic comes from WITHIN and you will have associations and ideas for this event and its meaning for you personally that NO ONE else will.

My recommendation is to take your journal and jot down your associations in a first thought/right thought kind of way. I often do this with my students and clients, I’ll tell them: “I say Saturn, you say:” And then write whatever comes to mind. Even if what comes to mind is: I don’t freaking know anything about Saturn! That too is fine and can be worked with.

You can then use these notes as a jumping off point for writing a petition or voicing specific magical desires BUT, and more importantly, these notes start to outline what a relationship with these Holy Helpers can be and look like. They give you a starting place.

But before that, we will talk more about the Holy Helpers that are Saturn and Aquarius.

The Dream beneath the Dream

Lunar Letter

Shoes inscribed with sacred symbolsUnda Wata Man’s Shoes” by Tosha Grantham (Translation: “Shoes for Walking in a Parallel Universe”)

T

hese magical shoes would be worn by a sacred artist who is going into the liminal, walking between the worlds. This is often how it goes with our dreams too…there is the dream we know, the dream we easily perceive, and then there is the dream that is part of the “otherword”, the hidden realm where we need more than the five senses to apprehend — we need hearts and minds and hands willing to look harder, willing to dig deeper.

As many of my longtime readers know, I was raised within a magical family, but I had no intention of becoming a professional sacred artist. In fact, I was all about law, and throughout high school won award after award in speech and cross-examination debate. I had my entire future neatly mapped out: scholarship for pre-law at UT? Check. Followed by law school at a top tier school? Check. Followed by hours and hours spent immersed in constitutional law? Check, check and check.

I cannot tell you how grateful I am that things turned out otherwise.

It started when I got sick the winter between my junior and senior year. Very sick. Underweight and bed-ridden for pretty much my entire Winter break. It was clear to me then that while my mind had decided on the dream I was going to pursue, my body had other ideas, and one way or another I was going to have to listen. It was clear that even at the high school level the kind of intensity required by my chosen field was not going to work for me physically. I knew it would only get worse in college and then again as a full-fledged lawyer. So the question became…why do I really want to do these things? If this is my dream, I said to myself, then what is the dream beneath that dream?

Stories like mine are not uncommon, and I actually got off pretty light. More devastating is the young dancer who discovers she has a stress fracture in her spinal column and cannot dance professionally anymore, ever. Or the athlete who has pinned all her hopes for the future on a college scholarship that never quite comes through. The surgeon who is hit by a drunk driver and no longer has the extremely fine motor control his craft requires. These stories sound dramatic, but they happen every day to people just like you, just like me.

More common still is the person who is waiting for just the right job, opportunity, amount of money, level of skill or security to do what they have always really wanted to do. All too often we spend our lives waiting for a moment that never arrives because it never existed in the first place. There is no perfect time, there is no perfect moment. There is what you have and who you are, right now, today. That formula possesses all the magic you need to do what you really want to do, to be who you really want to be.  If, that is – and this is the tricky part – if, you are willing to ask…what is the dream beneath my dream?

So it is that the dancer dances for the beauty and grace of Dance — and there are many, many ways to be for the dance. The athlete is in it for Victory, and victory comes in many different forms. The surgeon? The surgeon heals — that is why they do what they do, and there are many ways to bring about healing. The girl who loved law and debate? She loves to help people by making complicated ideas simple and understandable, so she became a teacher.

And what about you? Under this full moon in Virgo — the sign that sings of devotion and excellence in craft and living — what is the dream beneath your dream? If you dream of a million dollars ask yourself why? If you dream of being self-employed and setting your own schedule, ask why? If you dream of the day when you don’t have this job, that lover, or this apartment ask…why? What is the dream beneath your dream – the real dream?  If we can name it, then we can call it into being, we can begin to live it, right now, today.
