What is a Sacred Arts Education?

Ceremony and Ritual

M

iracles,

Your mind is not someone else’s bank, but our dominant model of education sure acts like it is.

I have written before that the word education is originally Latin (educare), and means to draw something out from within, rather than stuff something in. Strange to say, it means the opposite of what we all think popularly and traditionally education is.

Our default, go-to idea of education – what dominates schooling certainly in America from primary to post-graduate education – is what some have called the “banking model”.

It works like this: you deposit inert facts into a vault of the mind. Actually, let’s specify: someone else, usually with a specific agenda that may or may not be in your best interest, encourages you to deposit their preferred facts and figures into your sacred self.

If it sounds off, that’s because it is.

When we look at the actual root of the word education and all that it implies, we see that true education is much more like a well going down thousands of feet into the bedrock, tapping into a great underground river of intuition and vast inner resource. This is especially true for soulful seekers and Sacred Arts education – our entire premise is that the Sacred Arts occurred not one upon a time, but throughout all time. Meaning that they are here, right now, within you right as you read these words.

A Sacred Arts Education is discovery and recovery: we discover how to find that deep well, we learn what it means for us, and we learn how to use it with wisdom and power.

I am absolutely in love with this approach. Not only does it go against the grain of the current orthodoxies about schooling and learning, but it points the way to a North Star that is exactly true to our real lived experience, to the heart of learning at its most soulful, moving, personal, and healing. I love it because it works.

As the Latin word might already indicate, the idea of real education hearkens all the way back to, within the Western tradition, the ancient Greeks, and, in particular, Socrates. But the notion that you already possess the wisdom that you are seeking is one found in all times and all places; one of those perennial truths that has endured precisely because it is true.

Currently, it is often said like this: “You are your own best Guru.” Sounds good, right? Most of us can get on board. What is NOT often said though is the next part:

Though you carry your own wisdom and deep knowings without a doubt, what you may not possess, or remember so easily, and what you might in fact be looking for, are the best means by which to find, access, and work with that wisdom and deep knowing.

That’s what real education does for you, certainly what a Sacred Arts education should do: it provides the means to recollect and draw out what you already hold within yourself, what is truly your own. The practical force of this ability to draw effectively from within – the well that springeth out of thee – cannot be understated.

In other words, learning is not about memorizing random facts, nor is it about following any kind of blueprint step by step, word for word; it is not about imitating a teacher or lifestyle expert who tells you to go drink green smoothies or go bathe naked under the moon or learn to balance your checkbook. (No offense to green smoothies, moonlight, and checkbooks!)

Learning is most definitely not about letting someone/something else decide what you get to have access to and what you don’t. No. Thank You.

Learning is about you, and about what you can become in this life. It is about being given (by yourself) the time, space, and material that inspires and enlivens you to discover and re-acquaint yourself with – and create anew – your practices, ideas and your thoughts, your beliefs and your very deep knowings.

All of the work that I do, including the work of Spinning Gold, holds at its core this idea of learning. This approach to learning allows us to encounter truly rooted texts and ideas that carry real weight in our magical learning.

Consider what J.R.R. Tolkien said about one such work and one of his favorite stories, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight:

“For it belongs to that literary kind which has deep roots in the past, deeper even than its author was aware. It is made of tales often told before and elsewhere, and of elements derived from remote times, beyond the vision and awareness of the poet: like Beowulf, or some of Shakespeare’s major plays, such as King Lear or Hamlet. It is an interesting question: what is this flavour, this atmosphere, this virtue, that such rooted works have…”

Tolkien loved the story of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight for many reasons. But what I see in the above quote is that he loved it because, in reading it and spending time with it, he was able to actually learn something. That is, he was able to remember something of himself and put it into practice.

This is because the story is rooted, it speaks to, as C.S. Lewis says: time out of mind. It holds depth, scope, and as a consequence of both, reality. One can wrestle with it, ask questions, dig deeper, disagree; one can learn from it, and as it feeds and heals your heart and mind, it quickens the life within. You begin to discover and recover what is your very own.

In Spinning Gold, we learn how to root discoveries and our practices in the experience of six deep stories, primary source well-springs, of the Sacred Arts. This process quickens life and practice, broadens the mind and heart, sharpens discernment, opens new magical doors.

It also puts your money where your mouth is: for we often say we want more enchantment, more magic, more beauty, more miracles, more meaning…well guess what? What you do is how you live. You want more enchantment? Then you have to start practicing it. You already have what it takes, so let the stories show the way.

But, can we really do all of this online? You bet! If you, like me, start to get itchy when you have been in front of a screen for too long, or if the idea of an “online forum for discussion” makes you break out in hives don’t fret: I made a handy-dandy guide for how to get the most out of your online learning experience without living online, access it here.

Wishing you a week of deep discovery, real pen and paper, and a practice that is full of enchantment!

Many Branches–The Awesome Alexandra Franzen

Learning and Community

D

ear Miracles,

When I started doing business on the web I quickly discovered that writing for a website was different than any kind of writing I had ever done before. For the first time, I had to write a sales copy and I had to write emails to people I admired asking if they would be willing to…gulp…collaborate with me. I have yet to receive a NO and I think one of the big reasons why is because early on I learned about the remarkable Alexandra Franzen. Alexandra helped craft much of the copy on my site but she helped with so much more than that. With her scripts, her excellent blog, and her classes, I have learned how to be the best possible writer for my online audience. She is wise, kind, and super whip-smart — kind of an unbeatable combination!

In her own words:
ALEXANDRA FRANZEN wants to live in a world where emails are short, love letters are brave, and every “thank you” note is scribbled by hand.

A sought-after writing instructor + communication specialist, she’s been spotlighted on The Daily LoveThe Daily MuseMindBodyGreenFast CompanyForbes and The Huffington Post.

When she’s not scribbling up a storm, you can find her re-reading the collected works of Oscar Wilde, watching obscene amounts of television without a trace of shame, and optimistically checking her mailbox for brown paper packages tied up with string.

Her first book — 50 Ways To Say You’re Awesome — hits the shelves in October 2013.

I know people ask you about the ins and outs of writing and communication all the time — why do YOU love to write? What about the art form gets you hot and bothered?

The philosopher + linguist Ludwig Wittgenstein once said: “That which cannot be said cannot be thought.” I like to say: “That which cannot be said cannot be done.”

What I mean is this: If you have got a fantastic idea, but you can’t put that idea into words — words that other people can see, grasp and rally behind — then your idea doesn’t really exist. It’s just a fuzzy notion in your head. It’s got no shape, in the physical world. So: when you wrap words around your dreams, it’s the first step towards making them touchable + real. Words set everything into motion.

How HOT is that?

Write Yourself into Motion workshops — tell me everything!

It all started with a magical walk in the woods. (Literally.) I was strolling along the coastline of Vancouver Island with my dear friend Hiro Boga, and I said to her, “You know? I’d really love to create my own writing workshop.”

She smiled and said something wise + profound like, “And so you shall, young grasshopper.”

The very next morning, I woke up to find an invitation from two women back on the mainland, sitting in my inbox.

“Would you like to teach a writing workshop at our retreat in New Mexico?” they asked.

Oh, universe. You’re the BEST.

Fast forward to this year: I’m teaching my signature workshop — Write Yourself Into Motion — in 8 different cities for over 200 people. It’s a weekend of business and career-focused wordsmithery with me + 20 new friends.

It’s ridiculously fun. I cry almost every time. One time, my mom + dad came to watch. They cried, too.

Yeah. It’s like that.

You love brevity, but your words go deep. What’s your favorite trick to packing a punch with few words?

Before I sit down to write anything — an email, a blog post, a text message, a love note — I ask myself three questions:

1. How do I want my reader to feel?

2. What do I want my reader to know?

3. What do I want my reader to do?

Once I’m clear on those three elements, the rest is relatively simple: it’s just a matter of stringing words together in a way that feels lyrical + pleasant on the eyes (and ears).

Another technique? I often pretend that I’m writing a short poem, like a haiku — even if I’m (really) writing a newsletter or an article.

The end result is usually much tighter + leaner than it would’ve been, otherwise.

You have a new book out: Fifty Ways To Say You’re Awesome. What happens when we learn different ways to express our awesomeness?

Every human being on earth craves appreciation, recognition, and affection. We are all waiting for someone to look us in the eye and say, “You’re awesome. Really, truly awesome.”

Fifty Ways To Say You’re Awesome is an invitation to BE that person — to be a bright spot of gratitude in someone else’s day. To say “you’re the best,” “I see you,” “I get you,” and “wooooow.”

And if you can’t figure out the right way to say “thank you” to someone who deserves your complete + total adoration … well … you’ll find 50 bolts of inspiration, inside my book! ;)

If you could give one piece of wisdom to my readers today, what would it be?

Knock everything off your to-do list, except for the one thing that matters.

And then shelve that task for later, too … and instead?

Just write a letter to one person you’ve been meaning to thank, for a very long time.

Many Branches–Beth Owl’s Daughter

Learning and Community

D

ear Miracles,

So one of the things that I really do love about the web is how it has allowed me to connect to people that I would not have encountered otherwise and Beth Owl’s Daughter falls into that category. I LOVE her! We have been in some of the same social circles because we are both tarot readers but we really hit it off when I wrote an article about the Sylvia Brown episode and Beth graciously posted it at her very popular blog. From then on I knew I had found a kindred spirit in Beth Owl’s Daughter-even though we live far apart, and even though our busy schedules do not allow us to connect that often, we wave to each other through social media and I know that she stands with several other gifted intuitive as an example of what our field can be if we are willing to work with honesty and integrity!

In her own words:

For over four decades, Beth Owl’s Daughter has been a mystic, seer, and spiritual guide in the non-ordinary realms.  A trained Priestess and intuitive, she devotes her life to sharing her gifts with thousands of clients worldwide. Her lifelong passion has been working with the Tarot, an art she has been practicing since 1972.

Beth is…

* a master level Tarotist. She is a member of several organizations that promote and set guidelines for ethical Tarot practice.

* an internationally respected reader, teacher, writer, and leader in the professional Tarot community.  She has published hundreds of articles, reviews, and columns about the Tarot both in print and online. She has been featured in many radio interviews and podcasts and her blog and newsletter have received numerous awards.

* a former officer on the Board of Directors for Cherry Hill Seminary, the world’s first and only graduate-level educational institution for Pagan clergy.

* the founder and organizer of one of the world’s largest, oldest, and most successful Tarot social groups (the Triangle Tarot and Friends Meetup).

Beth Owl’s Daughter is also an ordained interdenominational minister, an Usui Reiki healer, and she practices the Craft with deep roots in the Reclaiming and Faery traditions.  She lives in a little cottage in the woods of northern Durham County, NC with her husband John, their cat, and countless spirit allies.

These days, having completed her second Saturn return, she is deepening her magical practice, and doing more teaching and writing.

You can find Beth on the World Wide Web at the following hot spots!

So, everyone probably asks you about your name, and I was reading about your name on your site. One of the features pointed out about owls is that they form a “Link between the dark, unseen world and the world of light” and I LOVE this idea. How does this resonate with your own work–do you form a link yourself, do you illuminate links that are already there?

Oh, what a fun, insightful question!  Thank you!

What this means to me is also expressed beautifully by the founder of analytical psychology, Carl Jung, when he said, “Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate.”

Mainly, I think I am a seer of patterns, which is why I love the Tarot since it is a symbolic pattern language.  With Tarot, and my other ways of knowing, I can see how patterns of behavior, thought, and habits act like engines in the subterranean realms in our consciousness. They can drive unhappy choices, self-sabotage, and other distortions that bring suffering.  Until they are recognized, they can seem like forces beyond our control or even understanding.

I do feel that at times, I am just helping show what is already there.  Other times, I experience that healing and transformation move through me coming straight from Mystery.  So I guess the answer to your question is I am honored to do both.

Your tagline is: practical wisdom for an extraordinary living–can you talk a little bit about how arts like tarot reading and magic can lead to practical wisdom?

I don’t know if I can talk a little about this. I can, however, talk on, and on, and on about it!

But attempting to be brief, I think that Tarot has gotten a bad rap as being only for gullible cloud cuckoo-land woo-woos.  While I do use the cards in mystical and esoteric ways, I also see Tarot as an instant, intimate kind of personal Google.

The Tarot can be an instant, truth-telling tool any time you need help on your creative projects, understanding relationships, working through life passages when you need support for healing – just about anything.  It can especially help us get clarity and perspective when making choices, even in the most everyday situations.

For instance, I love to consult the cards when I am writing and get stuck.

The first time I tried this was about thirty years ago.  I was writing a short story and couldn’t decide which way the plot ought to go. I got the bright idea of doing a reading to ask.

Surprise!  I got everything I needed and more!  The court cards told me about the dynamics of the characters in ways I had not considered; a couple of Major Arcana cards revealed huge insights about their motivations, and the pips offered a much better story arc than the one I’d planned.

Looking back, it seems so obvious, but at the time, it was jaw-dropping to me. Since then, of course, my fabulous Tarot colleague, Corrine Kenner, has written the ultimate book about using the Tarot as a writer’s tool, Tarot for Writers.

After that epiphany, I began exploring the most mundane questions about my work projects, vacation plans, and so on. I don’t recommend becoming dependent on the Tarot for every single decision in your life, but I also think that we have only just begun to discover the many pragmatic ways it can help us live on a bigger, more empowered and joyful level.

You are a tarot reader like myself — what is one thing about the work of tarot reading you wish more people understood or were exposed to?

Please don’t ask me to tell you what will happen. “Will he ask me to marry him?” “Will I get the job?” “Will, my house sell? And when?” “How soon before my daughter moves out?”

These are typical questions and I absolutely do understand our very human desire to wish we knew all the answers in advance. But that is not how the Tarot works because that is not how life works.

Tarot tells the truth. And the truth is, there is not some immutable destination called “the future,” that we are all just passively riding towards.  This is not a movie and we are not following a preordained script.

Yes, there are some readers who offer predictive readings, but even they will remind you (if they are ethical readers, that is), nothing is carved in stone – your free will to choose is always an option.

Other than our mortality, we can change just about anything. I just can’t buy that we are stuck on some conveyor belt of time heading into one fated event after another.

So my approach is to encourage questions that bring us clarity and understanding about the underlying relationships, perspectives, assumptions, and choices that are currently at work in our lives. The better we can see those, the better we can anticipate and shape the experiences that we actually want.

The closest thing to any correct answer about what will happen is another question: “What do you want to have happened?”

Knowing and naming your heart’s desire is true north and the Tarot is a compass.

Tell me about the Tarot Boutiques–they sound amazing!

Oh, Bri – they really are! We are having so much fun with these!

As you may know, I have been teaching introductory Tarot classes for many years and also leading our Raleigh-Durham Meetup, where we’ve had lots of study programs taught by myself and our other members.

But I have wanted to offer something more advanced, intimate, and even experimental.  My home is the ideal place because it has a very peaceful, magical vibe that I love to share.

Since January, once a month, I have been facilitating tiny “boutique” workshops that appeal to the “discerning Tarot connoisseur.” Each workshop is designed to focus on one specialty topic that can add sparkle to your personal or professional practice.

We have played dress-up, embodying the Tarot Soul Cards; we have gone on guided meditations; we have investigated how to create spreads and how to ask questions, and much more. And all with tasty snacks, lol!

Upcoming classes include working with Valerie Sim’s “Comp Tarot” method of comparing answers from different decks; creating and using a Tarot journal to boost your knowledge; Tarot as Muse (for writers, yes, but all kinds of creative pursuits); the use of herbal magic in association with the Tarot; and a mini-series about going pro.

Really, the possibilities are infinite, especially with my participants also adding their suggestions.  One afternoon a month, geeking out on Tarot in a kaleidoscope of ways – what could be better?

If you could give one piece of wisdom to my readers today, what would it be?

I believe we are living in a time when it is crucial for every one of us to find our gifts and get involved. We no longer have the luxury of playing small or hiding out behind our petty dramas. Find your vast underground pool of courage and step up!

Each person reading this has powerful intuitive wisdom and has the ability to make vastly important changes in a world that is in desperate need. Those changes may look small, but we never know which small action will be the tipping point that makes all the difference in the end.

Whether it is the Tarot, or runes, or healing, or simply cultivating more enlightenment and love – now is the time we were born for.  Keep asking questions, dare to peek behind the curtain of consensual reality.  You are so much more powerful than you might have thought, and our world is far more mysterious, aware, and divine than we’ve been led to believe.

Many Branches: Divine Alchemy with Hiro Boga

Learning and Community

D

ear Miracles,

Alchemy is often presented as a difficult to understand (to say the least!) concept best left to Renaissance-era mages and the Sacred Arts are seldom seen as having anything practical to say about business and our work lives. How wonderful it is then that we are going to spend time with the one and only Hiro Boga today. Hiro and I have worked in the same circles for quite some time — I admire her approach and respect the reverence with which she approaches ALL facets of life. Soak in her wisdom!

In Her Own Words:

Writer, teacher, business strategist, and energy alchemist, Hiro Boga teaches transformational programs and mentors creative women who want to shape a world in which soul and entrepreneurship, passion, and profit walk hand in hand. For the past three decades, she has helped thousands of clients and students reclaim joy, freedom, success, and creative sovereignty in their businesses, their relationships, and their lives. As a mentor and teacher, Hiro blends transformative energy technologies, the magic of a story, and grounded spiritual practices with pragmatic business strategies.  Hiro offers two signature group programs each year: Become Your Own Business Adviser and How To Rule Your World From The Inside Out: The Art Of Inner Leadership.

She also works privately with a select few creative entrepreneurs and visionary leaders to unfold the miracle of their lives and businesses. Explore her online Deva Cards, and a wealth of other free resources at HiroBoga.com Connect with her on Facebook, & on Twitter @HiroBoga

One of the descriptions of your work is “energy alchemy.” What does that mean?

Everything that has its being in our three-dimensional world, emerges from patterns and potentials held in the subtle energy realms. In other words, our physical world is intimately interwoven with the subtle energy matrix that gives birth to it. If you want to create something new (like a business, or a book), or transform a pattern that no longer serves you, the most powerfully effective way to do this is by working with the subtle energy matrix from which it arises. Energy alchemy is a set of skills, practices, and above all, relationships through which existing patterns are transformed, new patterns are created, and dreams and wishes are given concrete shape and form in the physical world. I help people articulate and create their soul’s deep desires in ways that seem miraculous, but that is grounded in the practice of energy alchemy.

Something I really enjoy about your work and the particular way you express your gifts is your focus on business. I think much of the time we have this sense of: “My soul work is over here and my business is over there.” What is the connection between business and soul knowing for you?

Business, too, is a physical creation that has its roots in the subtle energy realms. Your business has its own soul essence, its own life, which is separate from yours. The pattern for the perfect unfolding of your business’s life is held by its Deva. But its Deva (or soul, if you will) cannot act in the physical world without you. Your business can only come into being when you choose to partner with its Deva to bring it to life. You lend it your desire, imagination, creativity, heart, time, money, energy and resources, but ultimately it is a soul creation – a collaboration between your soul and its soul. North American culture creates artificial divisions between soul and body, soul and business, soul and “the real world.” This severing of soul connection from daily life is at the root of the epidemic of loneliness, isolation, despair, overwork, stress, fear, and violence from which our society suffers so profoundly. The truth is, everything is an expression of the soul. Our bodies are made of the same soul stuff as our souls. Our businesses are made of the same soul stuff too! When we meet our businesses with open hearts, as expressions of love and wholeness, we grow businesses that are in harmony with the inner pattern of their being. And, through our businesses, we serve wholeness in the lives of our clients and customers. Through our businesses, we help grow a culture of love, peace, creativity, abundance, safety, and delight in which everyone can flourish. Growing a business in this soul-infused way is a lot like raising a child. Rather than imposing your vision of who your business should be, when you meet it as a living soul, with deep love and respect for its sovereign being-ness, it becomes your joy and privilege to help it to grow into its own best self.

I love cards — tarot, playing, Lenormand, and oracle cards. Tell me about the Deva cards. How did they come to be, and how are people working with them?

I love cards too – they are portals through which you can enter and play in the subtle energy realms sensually, intimately. I first created them for the folks who participate in my programs – initially, as a way for them to connect with their deepest desires and intentions, and to meet and partner with the Devas of soul qualities that could best help them fulfill their desires. One of the main principles we practice in all of my programs is that you create by becoming the person who embodies your creation. So to create a prosperous business, for example, you infuse your own inner being with prosperity. You become part of the activity of the Deva of Prosperity. My deeper purpose, in creating the Deva Cards, was to offer a simple, easy and playful way for people to develop deeper relationships with the Devas. These are beings of tremendous power and radiance. Their presence infuses our world on every level. As we get to know them, we begin to understand the depth of what’s possible for our planet when we partner with the Devas to co-create the world in which we want to live. People are working with the cards – and the Devas whose presence infuses the cards — to grow themselves; to become more resilient, more trusting of themselves and the world around them; less reactive, more creative. They are growing healthy relationships with family, friends, colleagues, and customers. They are growing vibrant, prosperous businesses that support them in living in harmony with their own being, and in harmony with their world.

Become Your Own Business Adviser is an offering that I have heard stellar reviews about. How did it come to be and what does it help people accomplish?

This program emerged from my thirty-plus years of teaching, research and exploration into the nature of desire, power, business as a force for good, and the methodologies and relationships by which we shape our lives, and the world around us, as conscious creators. I’ve spent most of my adult life as an entrepreneur. To me, entrepreneurship is a sacred calling — a living expression of the creative power of the soul at work. I see a profound need, among our tribe of creative entrepreneurs, for practical skills in working with subtle energy to grow soul-infused businesses that emerge from, and support, our deepest values. Without that, being an entrepreneur can become an exhausting, scary and lonely journey. People get lost in all the hype around marketing and sales, money and systems. There’s so much “Do this! Do that!” that drowns out their own inner voice and leaves them depleted, disconnected from their own sources of wisdom and nourishment. I designed this program as a way for folks to come home to themselves; to trust their own wisdom; to develop discernment about their own values, and clarity about the kind of business they want to create. The program is designed to help them make decisions from a place of sovereignty, strength and inner guidance; to learn energy alchemy skills and build lasting relationships with the Devas of their businesses. In the process, they discover that doing business in this way changes everything.

If you could give one piece of wisdom to my readers today, what would it be?

Trust yourself. Trust your soul. Trust the Love that brought you here, into this beautiful, complex, bewildering life. You are a living expression of the Sacred. You are in constant relationship with everything around you. You are safely held; you are loved. You are powerful and wise beyond anything you can imagine. Trust the wholeness of which you are apart. Trust that you are safe. Trust that everything you need is already within you, like a seed or potential that you can nurture into full bloom. When you’re faced with a choice or decision, ask yourself: If I trusted myself — right here, right now — what would I choose? In your deepest heart, you know what you want and you know how to become the person whose life includes it.

Many Branches–Creating a Radiant Life with Heidi

Learning and Community

D

ear Miracles,

Heidi Rose Robbins is one of the few folks that make the stars come alive for me. I have always been interested in astrology but got easily bored with the point of view that only considers astrology useful in so far as it can predict various life events –Heidi Rose changed that. She reminded me how much more astrology could be — how the stars have formed a unique map to the highest and grandest expressions of who we are and what we might accomplish in this sweet world. Her use of poetry and story in talking about her work and art consistently uplift and inspire and her knowledge is deep-drink it up!

In her own words:

Heidi Rose Robbins has been a professional astrologer for over 15 years. In fact, she grew up learning the zodiac with her alphabet. She has a practical, sensitive (and inspiring) approach to astrology and has a thriving world-wide practice. She also offers powerful, transformative Radiant Life Retreats for women twice a year in Ojai, California. She is also the founder and driving force behind the Hello Love Experiment, a worldwide effort to encourage people to meet the world and one another, first and foremost, with love. It is her passion and commitment to speak of the depth of who we are and to grow into the next outrageous blossoming of our true selves. She lives in Los Angeles with her husband and their two children.

Your home on the web is Heidi Rose Robbins-Astrology for a Radiant Life-tell us about your business-the vision and the mission!

Astrology for a Radiant Life is dedicated to a fuller expression of our deepest Soul purpose and our heart’s unfolding. In my one-on-one practice, I love to help people identify their greatest gifts and encourage the fullest offering of those gifts. We address obstacles along the way, shed a few tears, laugh at our stubbornness and generally move towards our next concrete step in living more radiant lives.

You have so many wonderful offerings for your clients-one of the things you do that I really love are the Radiant Life retreats. So what does going on retreat with astrology look and feel like and where did the idea to work with clients in this way come from?

I’ve always loved the idea of EMBODIMENT– not just talking or thinking about something– but really living it. My education is in the expressive arts and my father is an astrologer. So, in a way, it was a no-brainer for these two worlds to intersect. But what happens when they do? I needed a way for people to come together and really investigate ON THEIR FEET what it means, for example, to be a Leo with Scorpio rising. How does that feel? What is possible with that combination?

Also, I’ve always loved poetry and sharing it aloud. I think of it as a heightened language that can pierce our hearts when the language of the day to day cannot reach. I love feeling how a poem lands in a group and opens up space for deeper truth-telling.

The retreats came out of a desire to teach in an experiential way and to feel the goodness and healing that can emerge when we gather with an intention of living our most radiant life as a gift for others.

One of the quotes on your site is…”I love the territory where the most VAST meets the most concrete.” I LOVE this and am nodding my head, yes! yes! Can you talk a little about how this territory informs your work and how astrology can help us explore that territory?

Well, this is the juicy stuff. How does the vastness of our heart meet the morning rush getting the kids ready for school? How does our soul purpose meeting the daily grind? How do the most heightened experiences of our lives breathe into our day to day tasks and imbue them with light and love? I love to LIVE in these questions.

I love to practice feeling my own closure, my own self-imposed confinement and then remembering the BILLIONS of others on the planet who are each wrestling their way into the light. Every time I feel sad or heavy or creaky or cranky, I try to take one breath into something much larger than myself. I try to remember the love of the sky or the breath of a valley.

One of the reasons I love poetry so much is I think it is a VAST language and yet can touch us at the most immediate level.

The feeling I get from much of your work is that you fuse your astrology skills with self-improvement, development, and empowerment. Can you talk about how astrology helps us with these goals?

Astrology is a tool to help us see who we truly are. It gives us a glimpse of a QUALITY that we can embody that could be a gift for all. I like to think of myself as an 80-year-old woman and I like to imagine a young person coming to sit with me in silence for a time. And I like to imagine the GIFT that I might embody to such an extent that that young person couldn’t help but leave imbued with that quality.

Astrology is deeply inspiring because it reminds us of who we can become. It is the LANGUAGE of becoming.

If you could give one piece of wisdom to my readers today, what would it be?

Just for one moment today…

Let your heart be drawn to something or someone beautiful. Breathe in that beauty. Just for one minute. Breathe in that beauty.

And then too…just for one moment today,

Bless someone. Let your whole heart usher forth goodness and inspiration for another. Send a stream of silent blessing.

Life begins to vibrate with a kind of sweetness and peace when we manage to do those two things daily.

Big love to you all!

Many Branches–Getting Courageous with Kate

Learning and Community

D

ear Miracles: I am so delighted to present the first installment in an ongoing series, Many Branches. Many Branches is a monthly guest post written by some of the brightest folks I know. They may or may not work in the world of Sacred Arts, but they always have wisdom and insight that applies to all of us!

Getting Kate Courageous from Bri Saussy on Vimeo.

For the first Many Branches profile I sat down with the remarkable Kate Courageous from Your Courageous Life.

We riffed on why fear can be a great teacher, how reality is limited (and limiting), and the good, bad, and ugly sides of manifestation among other things. I hope you enjoy it and I hope you learn something!
