iracles,

Happy New Moon in Scorpio. Today is a time of depth and magic making. Here is a blessing to get you started, it is a blessing for the Dead and very appropriate for this time of year.

We are padding softly into November as this month is much quieter than rowdy October and begins to really unfold into the late Autumn and Winter months that are some of my personal favorites.

On Halloween we dressed up (Jasper was a gladiator, Heath was a wizard, I was an owl, and David was a Mystic) and went trick or treating. We always have a Halloween party at our house that my family joins us for because trick or treating in my neighborhood is a ton of fun. My fave costume this year: little ones dressed up as Coco from the film. There was also a pretty fantastic family of Pikachu creatures.

Then, early on November 1st as I lit candles and incense at my ancestor altar and made the first round of offerings I sent in the final copy-edited version of my book manuscript. I really took my time on this last round of edits because after sending in the manuscript there is no more editing, it now goes into the next phase of production and any significant changes result in delaying the entire schedule. It felt very good to send in the manuscript while I was also honoring and listening to my ancestors, exactly right for a book about magic!

The last few weeks have also been full of the kindest words, compliments, and votes of confidence for this work of my heart in the form of some truly fantastic endorsements. I wrote earlier about endorsement gathering – how it is this process of both great humility and also fantastic surprises.

It has been so interesting to see who is too busy to endorse, who is willing and ready to show up and endorse, who makes time even though their schedules are crazy busy and who does not. I have learned much about various figures in our community that I have admired and looked up to and have been so floored by the kind words and support that have come from corners both expected and also unexpected.

On a side note: do you keep a running document of the times that people compliment you? If not, can I suggest that you do so? My publisher has me keeping a word document with all of the endorsements the book has received and when you are having a crap day or someone has said something unkind or thoughtless it is a really powerful exercise to look at the words of kindness and praise that have been lavished on your work. It is not about feeding or stroking your ego, it is about reminding yourself that the work you do makes a difference for people, makes lives just a little sweeter, just a little better. Do it. Make your list. Pin it to your wall. Add to it regularly.

The boys are doing beautifully. Jasper had a 1st grade bike race last Friday and, though he only learned to ride his bike two weeks ago (which is better than me as I have STILL not learned how to ride a bike!) he finished in the top seven. We have been working on homework together and I am teaching him something that I constantly remind myself of and tell my students too – “to make double-sure” that everything has been addressed. This is important in math, spelling, reading, and yep, magic too.

Heath is headed into 5 month old territory. Yuletide came a bit early for him as we found this amazing subscription box that has answered one of my most burning questions: where does one find toys for infants and what toys are appropriate? Love. This. So we are playing a lot and going on lots of little adventures. He is teething and so it is very much “hold him at your own risk” because you will be slimmed by his drool, but he is so ridiculously cute that no one cares!

Meanwhile, in between books and babies and seven year old boys, David and I are creating a new astrology course that will be really incredible (I can’t wait to share!). I wrote a Magical Missive on creating a prayer bundle (and you can find all of the other Magical Missives right here), there is a new Talking Shop Podcast up, and of course Mercury Retrograde is right around the corner so you all need to freshen up on What to do BEFORE Mercury goes Retrograde.

I wrote a review on Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab’s The Fool’s Journey Tarot Collection. Go to the post on Canto, leave a comment, and sign up for BPAL’s newsletter to have a chance at winning an ENTIRE SET of the Magician oils – yeah, they are all out of stock so this is pretty spectacular.

We have also been in mid-term madness over here – someone stole my Beto yard sign, can y’all believe it?! The results are now in and the dissecting is getting going in earnest. News, staying on top of it, but also not letting it totally stress us out and depress us, has been an ongoing subject of interest in our Sacred Arts community. My favorite source for news these days is the Skimm. It gives me exactly what it says: a skim of major events and then I can go deeper if I want. It is delivered in a smart voice that is also just a bit valley girl funny and for some reason that mix is really hitting the ticket for me right now.

In other news, did you know my friend Alexandra has a new book out? It is called So This Is The End and it is a love story with a twist – you have 24 hours of life left – what do you do with it? Y’all know I love questions like this!

And if you need more in the way of books, you can pre-order Theresa’s latest – Tarot for Troubled Times – right here.

Over at the Sacred Artists group we are going to spend this month talking about two of my favorite subjects: FOOD + MAGIC. Come join!

Oh! And last but not least – Jupiter is moving into its home-turf of Sagittarius today. I hosted a call about this that you can listen to here if you haven’t already and there is still time to sign up for Light the Way magic – you have until noon, central time to get in.

Blessings for a beautiful and brilliant November!

xo,

Bri

Hearth and Home Vol. 8 – Refilling the Cup

Learning and Community

M

iracles,

Happy October!!! On the night of September 30th, as I was cleaning up from the Archangel Michael Feast Day, I glanced at my October calendar, and nearly started to hyperventilate. Oh. My. Goodness. We are now full-on in the season of magic, which means that I am full-on busy, add to that all of the school functions that happen in October, the birthdays (mine!!!) and anniversaries (also mine!!!) that also occur in October.

Looking at October, I began to feel what I can only describe as dread at all the busy-ness, which is NOT how I wanted to go into the month. So I stopped before panic mode truly set in, and I asked myself: OK, Bri – you know you have a lot going on this month, so what practices do you need to be really vigilant about in order to enjoy your favorite month of the year?

I thought about this question, and I felt into it just as I have my students do. I realized that I needed to commit to practices that really support me in feeling expansive when it comes to time and space. The month had not even started and I was feeling like I did not have either! For me, these practices are active imagination journeys – the kind we do in Spinning Gold and the kind I have taught in the Miracle Tree Sessions for several years now. They always begin with cultivating calmness, then my working place in the Otherworld always starts at the crossroads and I go from there. I was telling a friend of mine that the first part of the year, right up to this month, has felt like a huge out-breath. It has been so active. I have been so active. Writing a book, having a baby, traveling quite a bit over the summer, a full roster of students that I work with one on one…all really good things that I absolutely love and also all very outwardly active experiences.

Now that the skies are grayer and the weather will (maybe? hopefully!) start to cool down, I was struck so profoundly with the need to go inwards. For me that is more quiet time in my daily practice and prayers, planning with an eye to next year, and reading, reading, reading. I stayed away from reading books while I was writing my own because I needed to WRITE, but now I am making up for lost time and averaging about a book a day. Not even kidding. I’m reading fiction, non-fiction, and everything in between. I am spending time listening to podcasts and just soaking in inspiration and ideas and gorgeous words. This is better than any ten thousand dollar retreat – holding Heath, reading or listening to something interesting, then turning to my husband and talking with him about it. This, my friends, is pure gold in Briana-land.

So I’m reading, I’m cooking more, I’m making time and space to write, I’m playing with my three month old, I’m snuggling down with my seven year old and telling him a different version of Blue Beard or the Twelve Dancing Princesses or Iron Heinrich every night. I’m listening to my Holy Helpers. I feel the next wave of creative ideas and inspiration coming.  I can see the shadows that wave is casting – good, robust, luminous-on-the-inside shadows. I can taste its depths, and I am taking care of myself, re-filling my cup, so that when it is ready to crest I will be ready.

These realizations turned what was looking like a pretty scraggly cat of a month into something glossy and plump, wild, and wise. A time of year that I am actually going to linger through and savor and enjoy. My birthday is this month on October 13th and on that same day Heath turns four months old. He continues to be a really happy child, reminding me to RELAX and PLAY and have FUN. Our seven year old, Jasper, teaches me how to be patient and to live within my creativity. J is a deeply artistic child (I’ve shared some of his drawings before and those of you who have met him in real life know what I am talking about). He is the kind of child who does not do something creative, he lives it. By which I mean, he has to be reminded as all 7 year olds do, to put on shoes and brush teeth and feed fish, but he does not have to be asked to play the piano from hi heart or to sit down and draw or to build something out of Jenga blocks. He just does it, as naturally as you please. And sometimes it is funny and sometimes it is weird, and sometimes it is deeply divine and makes you feel like angels striding through your living room. That is living within our creativity. My 7 year old is an excellent teacher and I am trying to keep up with the lessons.

This is also the month when I celebrate being married to be the most incredible man – for twelve years now! David is the best husband, best dad, best partner is business and in life I could ever have been blessed with. He is without a doubt my person, my guy, my love. Both my birthday and our anniversary will be celebrated with good food and forays into the forests as soon as the weather cools down and the mosquitoes become a little less blood thirsty. As I dance into my 38th year I just feel so grateful. So grateful to our gorgeous community, so grateful that I get to wake up and do work that I love with people that I love every single day. So grateful that my beloved and I get to spend our days together, working, wrangling, and loving each other as we do. It is not always easy, this magical, enchanted life; but I would not trade it for anything, and I cannot pretend to be anything other than deeply blessed. So many of you who are reading this have helped make that possible in countless big and small ways. My gratitude to all of you is truly boundless. And I have so many fun things coming up in 2019 to help show that gratitude. I cannot wait to tell you all about them – soon, soon!

A bunch of you have asked about the book and what is happening with it now. So we are now in the copy-editing phase of the production. This is a different kind of editing than what we were engaged in before – if book production was compared to a manicure, then this part is the application of the clear, fast drying top coat. It is important because it brings yet another level of cohesion to the entire manuscript (and it has us all bowing down in devotion to the Chicago Manual of Style). We are now in the last leg of the book formation journey. Any small changes I want to make to the book have to be made by October 31st (yes I know, how perfect is that?).  After that day, any changes start to slow down the next leg of the book birthing process. So I am lingering over my book this month, spending a lot of time with it, taking it for walks, for long baths, going over every word and sentence, story and idea, because once it is out in the world on shelves and in hands, it is not mine any longer, it becomes yours, all of yours, and I want to give you something lovely and thought provoking and well-made.

I am also in the endorsement gathering phase. Getting endorsements is straight up going out into a neighborhood and knocking on a bunch of doors, and asking people who are known to be gifted in seeing and assessing and blessing if they will spare the time and the effort and take a moment to bless you, to bless your work. That’s what you are doing: you are asking for and gathering up blessings. It takes courage. Sometimes the answer is no. But often the answer is yes and the blessing received is so much more than the seeker could have ever imagined. There are more pieces around the book that I will be asking you about soon as I need your input and opinions.

I’ve also turned my attention to writing new material, starting with a long article about Witches that many of you emailed me about and generously shared your thoughts. I love those exchanges. It usually takes me a few days to get back to all of the emails but I love them. It means so much and it is such a blessing to be able to hear what you have to say, what my words encourage you to think about and speak out about in your own lives. That is, hands down, my favorite part of the internet, and we do not even have to do it through social media! I can just write something and send it out to y’all and y’all show up with brilliance every single time. How stellar is that?

So I wrote earlier about re-filling my cup, and here are some of the ways I have been doing it. I have been reading this and this and this. Listening to this. Playing with this and covering myself with these. And I have also made some things for you because I love making things for you. I wrote a little guide on how to incorporate astrology into your planning processes – I call it Planning by Starlight and you can snag it here – totally free: enjoy! I have a blessing for the New Moon in Libra right here for you. And I also want to remind you that I have a litany of blessings if you ever need to be washed over with blessings. Theresa and I have a new podcast episode up. There are also a bunch of articles on working with, honoring, and celebrating our Beloved Dead as we enter into Ancestor Season. And reminder, if you want to know what the latest offerings are, you need to sign up for this email list as I keep this one commercial free. And I wish this for you: a decadent, delicious, sweet as honey, October for you – a time that you are really able to enjoy and appreciate and dive into.

Planning by Starlight

Divination and Dreams

M

iracles,

Working with astrology in a practical manner that speaks directly to our lives is something we all want to be able to do. Astrology is not one of the most popular sacred arts without reason! And when it comes to figuring out how to work with astrology in a really practical manner, planning with it is right up there near the top of the list.

Unfortunately, this is also where the problems often begin. Almost as soon as we begin we can feel lost: ascendent this and ruling planet that, where is your sun and where is your moon, and what the heck does it mean that I have Mercury in the 8th house?! The problem is basic: we are suffering from information overload.

Specifically there is too much information to process and a lack of clarity about how to discern the information that is most relevant to you and your goals, dreams, and desires.

It makes sense. The study of the stars has been with us for millenia and some version is found in every culture. Many of you know how central storytelling is to my work and I truly believe that we started telling stories as we gazed up at the glowing heavens in wonder, awe, and yes, sometimes fear.

So, we have a study that spans time and culture and has been around for thousands of years. Add to that, the basics of astrology as most of us practice it here in the 21st century developed Western world, begins with 12 planets, 12 zodiacal constellations, and 12 houses that correlate to specific life areas and concerns.

Right off the bat we are dealing with 36 terms and that is before we get into major aspects (like conjunctions or squares) and even before we talk about the way that the four elements (earth, air, fire, and water) speak to each component!

So then, we try to take this information and plot it into our planners and calendars (and I don’t know about you but for me just making sure I know what appointments I have on tap for the next week can feel like an uphill slog).

No WONDER we experience information overload when it comes to planning by starlight. That smart and savvy intuitive voice within you might be telling you that there has to be a better way and you know what? That voice is right.

If the biggest challenge in astro-planning is information overload then the solution is actually pretty simple. Aristotle mentioned it thousands of years ago…start with what is closest to you. Start with what you really want to focus on in the coming year.

See, this is the beautiful thing about astrology and actually all of the Sacred Arts. You don’t need to know all of it or everything, you just need to know enough to make a beginning and you can make a beginning anywhere.

I am going to give you my process for planning throughout these lessons, but in this first lesson I am going to talk about how I initially approached astro-planning when I was much younger. You might be tempted to think about this as a “beginning level” or baby steps, but I will tell you from my personal experience that I have talked to many seasoned and advanced Sacred Artists who have not incorporated these steps into their own practices and once they do they are pretty impressed with the results.

Planning By Starlight Part One

Before we get into the astro-planning part I want to say a few things about planning in general. In my experience you will have the best success at planning if you do the following:

  • Understand that this is going to be a multi-day process – you won’t get all of your planning done in one day, I don’t get my planning or the year completed in a single week – I take a couple of months to do it.
  • Pick your planner(s) – I like both paper and digital planners. I use a filofax for my paper plans and I use my icalendar for my digital plans. The ical (you could also use outlook or gcal) function is nice because it syncs to my phone and reminds me when I have an appointment. I can also share it with my husband’s calendar, and I can send invites to my clients and students for one on one sessions directly from the calendar. I like a paper version because sometimes weird things happen with digital calendars and if you have a hard copy you are set. If you want more options on planners I highly recommend JetPens. I also like to have my journal by my side.
  • Have your materials ready to go! Some of the things I like to have on hand include: different colored pens, highlighters, mini-sticky notes, colored mechanical pencils, and my computer. Some people really get into stickers and inserts. Some folks like to have a color-coded legend. I like to have some good music on hand too! You might want to invest in a good lunar calendar and have on hand a resource page with the astrological highlights for the coming year – like this one.
  • Plot out any essential dates non-astro dates first. These might be birthdays, anniversaries, national holidays, or known periods of time when you will be on vacation. If you have children, get their school calendar and plot out the days and times that they have off, special celebrations, etc. If you follow a specific religious or spiritual practice make sure that you mark out your Holy Days as well.

Now you are ready to start working with some astro info! As I wrote above, you can start anywhere. And with astrology the best place to start is with the really obvious stuff – the celestial bodies that you can actually see with your naked eye. Here are three approaches to help get you started:

Sun Sign ~ Most people’s beginning point with astrology is learning their sun sign. This is the zodiac sign that the sun was transiting during the time of your birth. The sun remains in each sign for about a month and because its motion is fairly regular those month long periods more or less retain consistent start and end dates. When you are talking to someone and they say “Well of course I care about my work, I’m a Capricorn!” they are sharing their sun sign with you. These days you can literally google your sun sign if you happen not to know it. Identify your sun sign and work with that as your first (and possibly only) step in your planning adventure this year. Here is how to do it:

Let’s say that your sun sign is in Sagittarius. The first thing you can do is note when the sun will be in this sign in 2019 (November 22nd – December 22nd).

Mark out that time period on your calendar. Your birthday falls in this period so obviously star that day. Then, think about how you typically feel during this time of year.

Do you feel too busy and unable to really enjoy your solar return (ie, birthday)?

Do you feel like this is your favorite time to go on vacation?

Do you want to snuggle down and rest during this time of year?

Think and feel into years past and what your experiences have been. Jot down a few notes. Then ask yourself, what would I like my experience to be this year during this period?

Think about the sun. In traditional astrology we consider it a planet and it is the planet of enlightenment and revelation. Practically speaking the light and warmth of the sun makes our lives possible. Think a bit about the sign of Sagittarius. Here is an article you can read on it if you don’t know where to begin. What are some of the major themes you associate with this sign? How might they play out in your practical planning?

See? Planning with your Sun Sign! Easy!

I see the Moon ~ After working with your sun sign you may want to turn your attention to the moon. Lunar-based calendars are some of the oldest and the Moon gives us a reliable way to tell that days are passing because this celestial body actually transforms over a 28 day lunar cycle – going from seeming to be completely invisible in the night sky (during the New Moon) to full and radiant, to vanishing once more.

There are many ways to incorporate the Moon into your astro-planning projects but the easiest and best place to start in my opinion is with a lunar calendar. Get one for yourself – there are many to choose from – and treat it as a kind of journal. Each day notice what sign and phase the moon is in – this is a great way to familiarize yourself with the Zodiac too. Every day, jot down a few notes directly into your lunar calendar. These notes should describe how you felt on this day (because the moon speaks to our feelings), and record any places you felt stuck or deeply intuitive (because the moon speaks to both of those areas as well). After a couple of months of this you will start to notice patterns and get a sense of what moons are really supportive for you and what moons might pose more of a challenge. You can then consider this information in your planning efforts.

You may also want to note in your calendars when the full and new moons are every month. These days have been honored since time beyond time and a good way to begin appreciating the stars and all they have to share is by setting aside a little time during these two points each month to honor and observe the heavens. Here are some ways to do that on the New Moon and here are some ways to do it on the Full Moon.

Pick a Planet, any Planet ~ So, you are now considering the sun and moon in your plans. This is great because you can look up in the sky at any time and connect to either. As you are looking at the night sky you might see that there are some other celestial bodies asking to be noticed. They might look like really bright stars but they are not, they are actually planets. Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, and sometimes Uranus can be seen with the naked eye in the nighttime sky at certain times of the year. (And hot tip for beginning star gazers: the best time to look at the night sky is during a New Moon because the absence of the moonlight allows the stars to shine brighter).

Planning with the planets has many layers but again, we start really simple. And with the planets the best place to start is in understanding how they work from a Sacred Arts perspective. Quite simply the inner planets (Mercury, Venus, Mars, and of course Earth) speak to practical concerns and issues – the stuff that again, is closest to us. Here is how to work this:

Perhaps this is the year when you want to draw the right partner into your life, or maybe you are getting married this year and stuck on finding the best date for your “I Do”! In that case, you might want to really pay attention to the planet Venus.

Begin by asking if are there times of the year when she is visible and times when she is not?

Does she have a special day of the week associated with her? (She does, it is Friday).

Is she going to be retrograde (when the planet appears to move backwards) at any point in the next year? Mark out those moments on your calendar.

Maybe this is a year where you really want to make some strong professional connections, publish something, or move. In that case you might want to work with the planet Mercury – the mover and shaker of the zodiac. Consider the questions we asked for Venus and then go deeper. Mercury the planet resonated to the Roman God Mercury, the metal Mercury, the Ancient Greek Hermes, and on it goes. Find out about these figures and materials. What is their story? That might seem like an arcane approach but it is actually an approach that will allow you to plan all the better with this speedy planet.

If fitness, losing weight, winning any kind of contest or competition, or developing the discipline to attain mastery in a given area is your focus then you will want to work with Mars. Again, follow the same approach outlined above.

Just Start ~ Starting small, with one planet or one sign, or even one season, can often be the best way to make a start when it comes to planning by the stars because it guarantees that you WILL actually start.

And as you do this, do not, for the love of all that is holy, make it abstract. Begin by thinking concretely about the current year we are in. What has worked for you? What has not? Where did you feel like you had enough time and where did you feel like you did not? Having answers to these questions will set you up for excellent success as you look to the stars.

As you answer these questions you might find yourself thinking: yeah, yeah, Bri – this is great and it gives me a good sense of my personal preferences, but what about the big astro-events I need to be aware of? How do I factor those into my plans?

To which I say: hold your horses as that will be the topic of our next lesson!

And now I want to hear from you. Head over to the Canto post where you can leave a comment or ask a question. Everyone who comments has the chance to win an awesome prize – Kim Krans’ The Wild Unknown Journal!

Planning by Starlight Part Two

Welcome to the second lesson in the Planning by Starlight series! This lesson speaks to the reason why so many people love the idea of planning with astrology and gets you started on that path with minimal fuss. So, just a reminder. If you missed lesson one you can access it right above this section. And remember, you can leave a comment on the blog for a chance to win the Wild Unknown Journal by artist and author Kim Krans.

We ended the first lesson with a question about how to work with astrology to plan around major celestial events, especially for those of us who are not super well-versed in astro-speak and/or who are intimidated by all of the astro terms. This is one of the biggest reasons why people start to pay attention to astrology in the first place. Maybe you experienced a particularly rough Mercury Retrograde period and then found out about this whole thing called Mercury Retrograde. Maybe you saw your life fall apart and then dramatically re-arrange itself only to find out years later that those events all occurred around the time of your Saturn Return – and then you decided to find out just what the heck a Saturn Return even is!

In today’s teaching I am going to walk you through how to find out about and then plan for the major celestial events you want to keep an eye on whenever you are planning out the course of your week, your month, or your year.

Outer Planet Awesome ~ When it comes to looking at big celestial patterns that have the ability to deeply support or dramatically disrupt our lives, the first rule of thumb is to look at the outer planets. These planets include: Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto. (In classical astrology you will not see Uranus, Neptune, or Pluto mentioned as they were discovered later).

The outer planets represent big patterns and themes that we all want to be aware of as we make our plans. They move much more slowly than the inner planets do, so this gives us more time to get to know the outer planets, and also means that when they do something special – like move from one zodiac sign to another or go into retrograde – the effects are felt not just by us in our personal lives, but quite often in a more universal and global manner. The movements of all of the planets are called transits and usually when we speak of transits in astrology we speak of them like this: “For most of 2018 Jupiter is transiting the sign of Scorpio”. That means that for most of this year Jupiter has been moving through the constellation of Scorpio.

Understanding what is happening with the transits of the outer planets in a given year will help you make any big plans and also set you up to get the most of the coming year. We can also work with the transits of the inner planets but they tend to move much faster than the outer planets so there is a lot more data involved in those assessments.

Because the outer planets move so slowly they are pretty easy to map out:

Jupiter in Sagittarius

For most of 2019 Jupiter is in it’s favored sign of Sagittarius and then in December it moves into earthy Capricorn. Jupiter loves to be in Sagittarius. During this period expect your sense of self to radically expand as new options and possibilities present themselves. With this alignment there is a sense of freedom and possibility that is pretty spectacular. Travel, higher education and learning, and the development of your own personal philosophy are energized at this time.

Saturn in Capricorn

For all of 2019 Saturn continues a long and slow transit through its favored sign of Capricorn. Saturn moves into Cappy on December 19, 2017 and will be in Capricorn for about 2.5 years. If you have been paying attention you know that Pluto is also in Capricorn throughout 2019. Either planet by itself packs an incredible punch but both of them together is something fierce. On December 2nd when Jupiter joins them we will experience a triple threat in Capricorn where the energies of constriction, expansion, learning, destruction, and re-birth are all at cosmic play. Globally we should continue to see a shaking of the foundations of some of the most apparently timeless institutions as well as an infusion of discipline, conservatism, and possible asceticism too. Personally this is a time when all of us are focused on career and career opportunities as well as getting clear on the areas where want to gain mastery, and navigating what reputations we want to cultivate and share publicly.

Neptune in Pisces

Neptune continues moving through the sign of Pisces, giving us plenty of deep ocean to swim around in and go diving for treasure. Neptune in Pisces both supports our ability to dive deeply into our intuitive selves and also to heal not only on a personal level but on a global level. It also stirs up the waters so that problems and issues that need to be seen are able to float to the surface. On the flip side, as Neptune swims through it’s favorite sign we can all engage in more fantasy and problematic escapism – this is a time when it is especially easy to run up those credit card bills and engage in creative story telling that allows us to escape accountability. This is especially true during the Neptune – Jupiter squares. How to do Neptune in Pisces well? Don’t lie, trick or deceive – yourself or others, note your addictive tendencies, and focus on healing.

Uranus in Taurus

In May of 2018 Uranus changed signs, leaving the fiery Ram of Aries and moving into the stable territory of Taurus the Bull. Then, it retrograded and went back into Aries for a short stint. But on March 7th of 2019 Uranus moves into Taurus and STAYS PUT. This marks a seven year cycle that is going to shake up our most solid institutions and assumptions in both the personal and global spheres. To give you an idea of what Uranus in Taurus can look like, the last time it occurred was between the years of 1935-1942 – that was the Great Depression and beginning of WWII. While this transit may not be easy, it will absolutely re-orient some of the fundamental assumptions we make and basic ways we engage with life. Expect to see tech on all fronts including AI and Robotics gain ground and importance in both global economies and everyday life.

Pluto in Capricorn

Capricorn works hard and Pluto goes deep so this pairing cannot help but leave an impact wherever it happens in your chart. Capricorn is often thought of as the career sector of the chart but I think of it more as craftsmanship. The difference is that for many of us career is a notion tied distinctly to our jobs, while craftsmanship is a virtue that we can apply to many areas of our lives. Pluto relentlessly tears down whatever is not working and Capricorn has the good sense to continue moving forward and refining all needed skill sets.

Now, for some of you this is awesome information and for others you might also be feeling overwhelmed because none of this is helpful if you do not know what qualities and areas of life each planet speaks to. Many astrologers speak about the energy of a given planet and if you like thinking about it that way you certainly can – planets do give off energy, they give off sounds, and in some cases they give off smells! Personally, I think of the planets as Holy Helpers – they are celestial bodies that resonate to specific areas of life that people are interested in shaping or influencing in some manner. Painting in BIG brushstrokes here are some of the key ideas for each of the outer planets:

Jupiter – money, wealth, wisdom, teaching, traveling
Saturn – debt, banishing, mastery, discipline, asceticism, protection
Neptune – healing, dreams, intuition, magic, love, redemption
Uranus – connection, community, rebellion, technology, progress
Pluto – destruction, power, depth, secrets, re-brith, trauma, sovereignty

Here is how I suggest you work with this information: first, make a note in your calendars of where each of these planets are. Also check to see if there are retrogrades for each of the outer planets and if there are, when those occur (we will talk about retrogrades in a sec). If one of the outer planet changes signs, as Jupiter does in December, and as Uranus does in March of 2019, make a note of those moments in your calendars as well.

Once you have plotted that basic information you have some choices. If you are brand new to this method of planning pick ONE of the outer planets – maybe you want to increase your money this year so you pick Jupiter or maybe you are really focused on healing a chronic health issue so you pick Neptune. Learn about the planet. Learn about the God that the planet is named for and resonant to. Find out what prayers were said and what offerings were made traditionally by the people who worked with this energy. Get an image of the planet and put it in a place where you will be sure to see it on a daily basis. Write out the glyph of the planet on paper, in incense smoke, on your skin with oil or lotion. Learn what YOU associate with this particular planet – take the year really getting to know it.

If you want to take this a step farther, find out where the planet is showing up in your natal chart. Jupiter is moving through Sagittarius for everyone but one person might have Sagittarius ruling their 5th house while another may have it ruling their 8th houses. Those different positions can make a big difference in how that Jupiter in Sagittarius energy shows up in your life.

If you want to go even a step further then look at how the planet you have picked is relating to other areas of your chart. Because the planet is moving through a sign it will begin to form different aspects with other parts of your chart throughout the year. If you are an intermediate or advanced student of astrology then plan with an eye to this. Obviously when Jupiter is squaring your sun you don’t want to try to launch anything or raise money and conversely if it is conjunct your natal Neptune you have a really good opportunity to heal something either physically or spiritually.

As you begin to work with this method of planning you will notice that some outer planets really speak to you while others do not. There are a bunch of reasons for this. Your sun sign has a natural planetary ruler, depending on your chart you may have a planet in a very powerful position (for instance, in my chart Pluto is right on top of my Sun so I have a strong relationship to Pluto). You do not need to know anything about your chart or planetary ruler though to find out which planets really speak to you – all you need to do is pay attention to the moments when planets shift signs and when they go retrograde – those two instances will tell you if you really feel the presence of a planet or not, especially in the case of the outer planets.

Again, to use myself as an example, whenever Pluto goes retrograde I can feel it in my physical body. One year when it happened I got food poisoning and spent the day worshiping at the porcelain throne. In between bouts of vomiting I had to marvel at how precisely affected I was by the planet’s movement, a planet that in astrological medicine is associated with the intestines and waste elimination processes of the body. I came out of that experience with a clear realization that I was overworked and the next day I hired a VA.

So, note when the planets are going retrograde (where they appear to go backwards in the sky even though they really are not), and then when those events happen, ask yourself – how do I feel, what have I experienced and what have I realized during this time?

Mercury Moves ~ You can work with the inner planets just as you do with the outer planets but because the inner planets move much faster, it can be a bit overwhelming to plot their course throughout the year. Instead, I recommend you focus on one planet – the fastest moving of them all, good old Mercury. Specifically, you will want to note that what the Mercury Retrograde periods are for 2019. Here they are:

March 5, 2019 – March 28th, 2019: Retrograde starts at 12:19pm in Pisces, and ends at 8:59am on the 28th.

July 7, 2019 – July 31, 2019: Retrograde starts at 6:17pm in Leo, moves into Cancer on July 19th, and then stations direct on July 31st at 10:58pm

October 31, 2019 – November 20, 2019: Retrograde starts at 10:41 am in Scorpio and ends on the 20th at 1:12pm.

Mark these dates in your calendar and then go bookmark this post that tells you what to DO before Mercury goes retrograde.

Mercury is one of the most powerful planets to work with on a daily basis. This Holy Helper rules communication, technology in the day to day, connection, networking, presentations, speech, thought, publishing, friendships, and commerce. In the body Mercury resonates to our breath, ability to extend, nervous system, and mind. Most people only work with Mercury during its retrograde period, but I fee that of all the inner planets, this is the one that we should really be paying attention to during the whole year. You don’t need to map out all of the Mercury’s movements through the year – but advanced students can notice when Mercury moves over important spots in their charts and beginning students can pay attention to what they encounter during retrograde periods as well as what times of the year they feel especially articulate and clear-headed.

Return to Me ~ A third way to work with planetary transits is to focus on returns. You experience a planetary return when the planet in question returns to the exact point it was at during the time you were born. Because planetary motion is regular, returns are also regular. The best known return is your solar return – also known as your birthday! Everyone experiences a Jupiter return every 12 years. Mercury returns to its original place in your birth chart every year, and most of us experience a Venus return every one to two years. Saturn returns occur every 28 years. Uranus returns to the exact spot it was in at the time of your birth every 84 years.

Planetary returns respond well to reflection. If you have marked out in your calendars what returns you might experience in a given year then you are more likely to take even a couple of hours and reflect on what you have learned since the last time the planet was in that placement.

OK, so I know this post was information heavy! As always you can leave a comment on the Canto page and if you have questions let me know and I will answer them. As you start playing with these different possibilities you will probably start to notice a pattern (actually, you will start to notice A LOT of patterns) but you may notice that sometimes there are astrologically sticky moments or that there are big astro opportunities and now that you have marked them in your calendar you don’t really know what to do with them. I mean sure, you can “be aware” of them – but is there more to it than that? Indeed there is, and that will be what we cover in our third lesson!

Planning by Starlight Part Three

I am so excited to give y’all the third and final lesson in this Planning by Starlight series. Thanks so much to each and everyone of you for your participation, great questions, and comments – LOVE Y’ALL!

So, this next lesson is my personal favorite because it deals with what I think of as the number one missing piece when it comes to not just planning with astrology but working with astrology in general. And that, my friends, is magic.

So, here you are. If you followed along with the first two lessons you actually have quite a bit of information. You might be planning according to your sun sign or working with the phases of the moon. You have probably started to map out the transits of the major planets and noted when, in the course of 2019 those pesky Mercury Retrogrades are going to occur.

For more advanced students, you might be looking at how some of the major transits will affect your life by noting what area of your charts they show up in and what aspects they form with other important planets and celestial bodies. Whether you have started out very simple or you are getting into the nitty-gritty of planning by starlight, your planners are looking pretty spiffy and you should have a much better sense of the general shape of the year to come.

Now, if you have been paying attention, it is right at this point that a question naturally comes up. You have some solid-astro information plotted into your planner, yes, but what does one DO with the information? As I said in lesson two – there are more ways to work with this data than just paying attention to it – although truly that is a great place to start.

The first step to working effectively with astro-planning is to think about practical actions. I have given examples of these throughout the lessons so far – don’t launch something when Jupiter is retrograde, don’t have a big conversation with your significant other when Mercury is retrograde, if you want to focus on healing in the year to come work with Neptune, etc, etc. For each astrological observance you have mapped out in your planner you should ask yourself: what practical actions on my part can support this event so that it is a blessing in my life?

Do note: that does not mean that every astro event is going to be an obvious blessing. If Saturn is going to be prominently placed in your chart over the next year then you go into the year knowing that it is going to feel like a slog sometimes and expecting to get a little existential. You can also know that practical actions focused on reducing debt, exercising, tying off loose ends and generally being super responsible will be deeply supported by Saturn while going on a Jupiter/Venus/Neptune inspired art binging and shopping spree (and sure, throw in a wild love affair while you are at it) is NOT going to work well for you, no matter how fun it sounds.

There has been a debate in astrology forever about free will vs. fate with some ancient astrologers saying that the stars are the stars and whatever they indicate is simply fated to occur while others have always disagreed and claimed that it is our relationship with the stars that is the determining factor. As a sacred artist I fall firmly into the second camp, I believe our relationship to the stars is essential to both our understanding of them and our ability to work with them and not against them. After assessing what practical actions you can take, you may find that there are certain events that really seem to stand out for you. Maybe there will be a moment in the coming year when Jupiter is conjunct your natal Sun, perhaps Pluto is transiting the area of your chart the deals with money and cash flow (the 2nd house) and it has you a bit on edge, maybe you see that Uranus is changing signs from Aries to Taurus and the last time that happened we experienced both WWII and the Great Depression and so you are wondering…how exactly does one have a right relationship with that? This is where magic comes in.

Magic is the Ace in the hole for astrologers who do not buy into the fixed fate idea of the stars. More than that, as two Sacred Arts, magic and astrology have always been deeply related. Magicians, Priestesses, Sorcerers, and Witches all have worked with astrology to give them a sense of timing and to increase their chances at accomplishing whatever it is they have set out to accomplish with their magical work.

Some magical materials and talismans are traditionally made taking detailed astrological information into account – and for that reason can only be made at certain times or during certain years. In today’s world more people are familiar with astrology than they are with magic and so we see more and more people moving to magic as a way to deepen their understanding and relationship with the stars.

If there is an astrological event that is coming up over the horizon for you and you want to get the most out of it then I guarantee you the best way to do that is to marry smart practical actions with simple magic. And, very much like planning with astrology, you do not need to know much about magic in order to start working with this process. In fact, here are three ways you can start immediately:

Elemental my dear Watson ~ One of the ways that we know that magic and astrology are related sacred arts is because they share a common language and that is the language of the 5 classical elements. (For our purposes I am focusing on “Western” astrology – although much of it originated and was developed in the Middle East, and “Western” magic – although much of it has originated and developed all over the globe. To that end, I am referring to the classical “Western” elemental system, popularized by the ancient Greeks, but worked with extensively in ancient Egypt and ancient Persia). These elements are: Earth, Air, Fire, Water, and Spirit (also known  in some traditions as Ether). Every planet, zodiac sign, and house of the chart has an element associated with it. And in an individual’s chart there is often one or two elements that make strong appearances as well as one or two that do not appear much or at all.

This elemental information is useful to notice when it comes to all kinds of things – from balancing your health to balancing your checkbook, but it is also very useful to know when it comes to making magic because many forms of magic also work extensively with the elements. Your initial approach to this can be so simple that it might not even feel like magic (and typically that is a sign that you are actually on the right track).

So, for instance let’s say that my writing about Mercury has peaked your interest and you want to develop a deeper relationship with that particular planet. Mercury is associated with the element of Air so you might write a petition and then hang it from a tree so that the wind is able to blow through it, activating it. Or you might burn incense to Mercury on his special day of the week (Wednesday). If you want to take it deeper you might find out (or work with a professional astrologer to determine) when Mercury transits over the hot spots of your chart and set aside those days to do a little deeper work with the speedy messenger planet.

Perhaps you are really focused on physical healing in the coming year and have decided to work with Neptune. Let’s take it a step further and say that you have learned that Neptune is going to be conjunct (sitting right next to) your natal moon in Pisces. The element that both Neptune and Pisces are attuned to is water. So one beautiful way to work with this magically would be to take some drinking water, place it in a clear crystal or glass container, set it out under the Full Moon in Pisces (which occurs once a year at the end of August or in September) and allow the water to soak up the moonbeams and the vibe from Neptune. The next morning bring the water inside, say a blessing over yourself for healing, and drink the water down.

The singular best way to begin exploring the connection between astrology and elemental magic is to look at your own chart and discover which element is most strongly represented there. Begin to develop a relationship with that element. Here are some questions to help you do that:
What have my experiences of this element been like in my life?

What colors, scents, sounds, places, and stories do I associate with this element?

How do I feel when I am around this element?

How do I feel when I am away from it for a long period of time?

Sunrise, Sunset ~ Another, very old, way of working with astrology and magic is by working with the sunrise and sunset. This is probably one of the first ways our ancestors combined the sacred arts of magic and astrology because it is a daily occurrence and quite visible to the naked eye.

Work with the rising sun all the way up until the point that the sun reaches its zenith in the sky as a time of drawing towards you whatever it is that you have need of. You might ask for general blessings, for increased knowledge of astrology, or for something more specific. Notice how your requests change throughout the year and notice if there are times when you feel especially resonant to the sun’s presence and other times when you do not.

In the same way, work with the setting sun to remove things from your life you no longer need. Again, the requests may be general or specific. And again, you will want to notice when you feel especially attuned to the sun as well as when you might not.

Again, this magical work can look very simple. Standing in the direction of East (to work with the rising sun) or West (to work with the setting sun) and stating your need or desire out loud is one great way to get started. Take it farther by building an altar in the east or the west and doing your any attraction work or banishing work in those places respectively. Light a candle as the sun is rising in honor of its fiery strength, or focus on a melting candle as the sun sets with the expectation that whatever you are releasing or repelling will also melt away.

Moon Magic ~ Working magically with the moon is one of the oldest kinds of magic work. When we stand in the moonlight and listen to the night sounds we all feel our inner magic-maker begin to stir! Like the Sun, the Moon has phases that are idea for drawing and attracting whatever it is that you need and/or starting new endeavors, as well as phases for completing any outstanding work and tying off loose ends and also phases for celebrating what has been accomplished thus far.

The first thing to do if you want to magically work with the moon is to get a sense of the different phases. At the very least pay attention to the days when the Moon is full and then again when the Moon is new. Here is an article on making magic with the full moon and here is one for the new moon. The phase of the moon just before the New Moon, often called the Dark Moon is also a potent time, especially for self-care. Each half phase of the moon (known as quarters) is also special: the waning quarter moon is an ideal time for banishing magic and the waxing quarter moon is a great time for divination and/or sharpening your divination skills.

As you begin to explore the wild and wonderful world of lunar magic you will also realize that there is actually six months of magic in every full moon.

Again, I know I have given you all a ton of info but I really want you to have some basic tools that allow you to move from just passively noting the significant astro dates to actively working with the stars, planets, and the magic that speaks to them to create not only an organized year for yourself but a year that flows and is full of a road that is open and a way that is clear!
May it be so!

Divination and Dreams

M

iracles — Let us discover what is happening in the heavens so that we might be fully rooted here in this gorgeous earth.

In this post we will go through the various phases of the moon, briefly look at what each of the planets will be up to in 2019, and of course I will give you pertinent retrograde dates and eclipse dates as well.

As always for every single point I will give you at least one question to consider. Why?

Because although the popular way of teaching astrology (and most other things) is by telling you dear reader what I think they mean, I have found that a much better way of approaching anything in the sacred arts is to give you the tools to think about it, feel into it, and figure it out for yourself.

Questions, the right questions, can help you do just that. I teach magictarot and astrology in this manner and from the reports I have received and my own experience I know that it works.

So get those pens and notebooks ready!

And now, the dance of planets:

The Many Faces of the Moon

LunarLetter_FullMoonLa Luna is the most visible and easily trackable celestial body in the sky besides the sun. And so it makes complete sense that the earliest calendars were lunar to say nothing of the many ceremonies, rites, and feast days that honored Luna in her various phases.

Within the sacred arts there are four lunar phases to pay especial attention to: First Quarter, Full, Balsamic and/or Dark, and New.

New Moons are the best time to start any project or breathe new energy into any situation or area of your life. At this point the Moon is at the very beginning of her next 28 day phase – luna is starting fresh and so can we.

First Quarter Moons are best for looking at relationships and bringing harmony, balance, and intuitive insight to any given situation. Traditionally this phase of the moon was considered the best time to divine and the very famous Oracle at Delphi only gave out her divinations during this phase of the moon.

Full Moons illuminate the land and the sky, allowing us to “see in the dark” and making this the best time to look at and uncover the aspects of a situation that usually remain in the shadows; revelations occur during Full Moons.

Dark Moons are traditionally times to rest, fast, dream deeply, and banish anything that is no longer relevant and/or of use to you.

It is important to note that everyone has a very different relationship with the phases of the moon. While the above descriptions are tried and true in my life and the lives of many of my students and clients, I also know a hefty number of folks who feel (for instance) very depleted energetically during new moons and much more alive and full of energy during the Balsamic phase. Use the information as a springboard but then pay attention to your own experiences.

Sun

The sun moves through the zodiacal belt just as the moon does. Your astrological sign is determined by the Sun’s position at the time of your birth. As everyone has ALL of the zodiac signs in their own charts, it is very useful for you to know when the sun moves into a new sign.

Lunar and Solar Eclipses in 2019

There are five eclipses in 2019. You can learn more about eclipses and how to work with them here. In short, I have found that eclipses are very useful for breaking long-held patterns of thought, behavior, attitude, and action that no longer serve. Many astrologers talk about eclipses in negative terms but don’t let that keep you from noting eclipse times and trying your hand at working with them in an intentional manner. If you want to truly optimize your eclipse experience then check out my Eclipse Magic offering.

1/5: Partial Solar Eclipse at 15 degrees Capricorn at 5:34pm
Ask: What habits or patters are keeping me from taking myself and my work seriously?

1/20: Total Lunar Eclipse at 0 degrees Leo at 8:36pm
Ask: What stories around creativity are no longer relevant and ready to be released?

7/2: Total Solar Eclipse at 10 degrees Cancer at 11:55am
Ask: What is one pattern, attitude, and/or belief I no longer wish to follow when it comes to home and tribe and how can I reverse it today?

7/16: Partial Lunar Eclipse at 24 degrees Capricorn at 1:43pm
Ask: What stories keep me from making the big effort?

12/26: Annular Solar Eclipse at 4 degrees Capricorn at 8:29p
Ask: What success am I afraid of pursuing and what would happen if I did it anyway?

Planets

Just like the stars, planets move throughout the sky all of the time. The inner planets (Mercury, Venus, and Mars) all move relatively quickly through signs and sections of the chart. The outer planets (Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune, Uranus, and Pluto) all move at a much slower rate through the various constellations and houses of the chart.

Inner planets traditionally are understood to deal with every day, practical, real-life issues while outer planets are understood to work with big cycles, realizations, and patterns in our lives. First we will spend some time with some of the inner planet happenings in 2019, starting with the ever dreaded Mercury retrogrades.

Mercury Retrogrades for 2019

Every planet has retrograde periods but most people are only familiar with Mercury in Retrograde – mostly because many astrologers and non-astrologers alike make this period out to be terrible, full of bad luck, and extremely frustrating. It can be, but I prefer to practice with Mercury retrograde instead of in resistance to it.

You can learn more about Mercury retrograde in my Mercury rx archives here and check out this article to start to get a sense of how you might deepen your retrograde experience. If you are what I call Mercury-sensitive you will want to make a note of the things to do BEFORE Mercury goes retrograde and join up with the Mercury RX Survival Kit.

In 2019 the Mercury Retrogrades all occur in water signs with the exception of the second retrograde period in July which begins in the fire sign of Leo. When Mercury retrogrades throughout our watery friends we see a tendency for emotions to get the better of us, for brilliant insights and connections regarding art, spirituality, and concerns of the heart to be revealed, and for our ability to verbally articulate to take a backseat to our deep creativity. These retrogrades also often bring up potent dreams and dream cycles so be on the look out for that!

Here are the dates for the 2019 Mercury Retrogrades:

March 5, 2019 – March 28th, 2019: Retrograde starts at 12:19pm in Pisces, and ends at 8:59am on the 28th.
Ask: What dreams are ready to be re-visisted?

July 7, 2019 – July 31, 2019: Retrograde starts at 6:17pm in Leo, moves into Cancer on July 19th, and then stations direct on July 31st at 10:58pm
Ask: What patterns around nourishing myself and others are ready for review?

October 31, 2019 – November 20, 2019: Retrograde starts at 10:41 am in Scorpio and ends on the 20th at 1:12pm.
Ask: What power am I ready to re-claim?

Inner Planet Awesome: Mercury, Venus, and Mars

These three inner planets move through the sky and around the zodiac relatively quickly which means that they make many transits throughout the year. (If you want the full scoop on what each of the planets are doing then you should sign up for Star Magic which includes a monthly list of all essential astro events). However, there are a few transits occurring this year that are pretty important which you will find listed below. Happily there is no Venus or Mars retrograde this year – yay!

January 22nd and November 24th – Venus and Jupiter conjunct in Sagittarius. Whenever Venus and Jupiter are conjunct there is a great opportunity for abundance blessings when it comes to wealth, love, beauty, and general good luck and vibes!
Ask: What blessings am I ready to receive?

February 13th – Mars and Uranus conjunct in Aries. Mark this day on your calendar because when Uranus and Mars hook up we are often more accident prone in our personal lives and it is also more likely to see unexpected, violent outbursts in the world at large.
Ask: What am I willing to fight for?

November 11th – Transit of Mercury across the Sun. This is a rare transit where tiny Mercury makes it’s way across the vast Sun. It reminds us that the devil really can be found in the details and that very small things can exert very big influence. Think: the story of the Princess and the Pea as well as nanotechnology.
Ask: What fine details have overarching influence in my life right now?

Jupiter in Sagittarius and Capricorn

Jupiter in Sagittarius: For most of 2019 Jupiter is in it’s favored sign of Sagittarius and then in December it moves into earthy Capricorn.
November 8, 2018 – December 2, 2019: Jupiter is in its happy place with the celestial Archer.
Ask: What makes me feel free? Where do freedom and abundance show up in my life? How do they relate to each other? What uncharted territory am I ready to explore?

Jupiter in Capricorn: On December 2nd Jupiter moves into Capricorn. Traditional astrology regards Jupiter as “fallen” in the sign of Capricorn because Saturn-ruled Capricorn tends to emphasize constriction while Jupiter values expansion above all else. However, there is much common ground to be found between Jupiter and the sign of Capricorn and this ground will be emphasized by the fact that Jupiter will be conjunct with Saturn through much of its tour through Capricorn. This is a time when hard work, restriction, and thriftiness will be well rewarded as will the dedication to any specific skill or craft.
December 2, 2019 – December 19th 2020: Jupiter encourages a solid foundation as it moves through Capricorn.
Ask: What hard work am I willing to engage in and what rewards would I like to see as a result?

Jupiter Squares with Neptune: During its course through Sagittarius, Jupiter will square off with Neptune in January and September. These mark times where we all want to be especially careful not to engage in fantasy – especially when it comes to money, finances, religion, spirituality, and learning.
Ask: Where do I need to reign it in?

Jupiter trines with Uranus: Finally, on December 15th after Jupiter has moved into Capricorn it forms a rare trine with Uranus. This is an uncommon event that will put technology and futurism into the spotlight in an economic manner. We might also start to see an overhaul of teaching and learning opportunities that go high tech. Making money and deriving abundance from unconventional and radical ideas is at an all time high during this period.
Ask: What brilliance for the future am I ready to share?

Jupiter Retrograde: There is a Jupiter Retrograde in 2019.
April 10, 2019 – August 11, 2019: Retrograde starts at 12:01pm and ends on 8:37am.
Ask: What aspects of my daily devotional and spiritual practices are still relevant and what needs to be released?

Ask: Where am I ready to gain mastery, experience, and cultivate true excellence?

Saturn Retrograde: There is a Saturn Retrograde in 2019 in the sign of Capricorn.
April 29, 2019 – September 18, 2019: Retrograde starts at 7:54pm in Capricorn, ending on the 18th at 3:47am.
Ask: Where does my public presence and image need to be reviewed, re-assessed, and re-fined?

Ask: What is ready to be healed?

Neptune Retrograde: June 21, 2019 – November 27, 2019: Neptune Retrograde in Pisces. Retrograde starts at 9:36am and concludes on 11/27 at 6:32am
Ask: What unfinished creative/dream work do I need to turn my attention to now? What unhelpful fantasy needs to be revised and made relevant?

Ask: What assumptions are ready to be challenged?

Uranus Retrograde: August 11, 2019 – January 10, 2020: Uranus Retrograde in Taurus. Retrograde begins at 9:27pm and ends on 1/20 at 7:49pm.
Ask: What needs to be shaken up in my life and what needs to be settled back down?

Pluto in Capricorn

Capricorn works hard and Pluto goes deep so this pairing cannot help but leave an impact wherever it happens in your chart. Capricorn is often thought of as the career sector of the chart but I think of it more as craftsmanship. The difference is that for many of us career is a notion tied distinctly to our jobs, while craftsmanship is a virtue that we can apply to many areas of our lives. Pluto relentlessly tears down whatever is not working and Capricorn has the good sense to continue moving forward and refining all needed skill sets.
Ask: Why is excellence asking of me?

Pluto Retrograde: April 24, 2019 – October 3, 2019: Pluto is retrograde in Capricorn. Retrograde begins at 1:48pm and ends on 10/3 at 1:39am.
Ask: What aspects of my personal power need to be refined?

Star Stories: November 2017 edition

Divination and Dreams

M

iracles,

Lots of exciting starry goodness to share with you as we continue in this festive and liminal time of the year. Neptune gets busy this month and we have a special aspect between Saturn and Uranus that we will not see again until 2037.

And a little heads up: the next Mercury Rx begins on December 3rd and goes through December 22nd. As always I have plenty of Mercury Rx articles to get you ready – start with this one – and there are still a few spots left in the Mercury Rx Survival Kit so if you are Mercury sensitive then come join us!

Finally, November 4th is “fall back” when those of us in the US of A go back to “regular” time (can you hear Time God Saturn laughing?) Be sure to set your clocks back one hour on Saturday night before you hit the pillows.

The Sun

At the beginning of the month the sun is in the deep and tumultuous waters of Scorpio. This period marks one of the most liminal times of the year as it coincides with the many festivals for the Dead and kicks off the months ahead when the veil between worlds is at its thinnest. Plan accordingly like the soulful seeker that you are and don’t fill your engagement calendar until you are exhausted.
Ask: How can I go deeper?

On Tuesday, November 21st the Sun moves into Sagittarius. This brings a new breeze into our lives and an increased level of optimism. Mystical interests are at an all time high when the Sun is in Sagittarius as is our feeling of generosity and joy – perfect for the holiday season.
Ask: How can I make it brighter?

We end November on the 29th with a nice trine between the Sun in Sagittarius and the Moon in Aries. This trine gives us the energy, pep, and even socializing spirit that is brilliant for all the parties and celebrations that accompany this time of the year.
Ask: What do I want to celebrate?

Star Power BundleThe Moon

The Full Moon occurs on November 4th at 11 degrees Taurus, 12:23 AM
Ask: What is luxurious to me?

November 10th gives us the Waning Quarter Moon at 18 degrees Leo, 2:36 PM
Ask: What does false pride keep me from doing?

The New Moon at 26 degrees Scorpio is on November 18th at 5:42 AM
Ask: What shadow am I ready to explore?

November 26th gives us the First Quarter Moon at 4 degrees Pisces, 11:03 AM
Ask: What does right relationship with my intuition look and feel like?

Mercury

Mercury makes a sign change on November 4th moving from Scorpio to Sagittarius. Once in Sagittarius Mercury is know to be extra flighty and not as attentive to details. And we have a Mercury Rx in Sagittarius coming up at the beginning of December. So what does this mean?

Use the first week of November to double and triple check your plans for the holidays – especially flights and travel arrangements. If you purchase a lot of gifts that require shipping consider getting them sooner rather than later. On the flip side, you can use this time of Mercury in Sagittarius to really hone in on the big picture – perfect for end of year and beginning of year plan-making and goal-setting.
Ask: What is the big-picture story that 2017 has shared with me?

On November 13th Mercury squares off with Neptune and this energy can be a bit tricky to work with. Make sure that you do not buy into false ideas or illusions at this time and also make sure that you do not communicate them. It is a day when people may not say what they mean but, to give that a positive spin, it is also a day where there can be less speaking and more listening (and loving).
Ask: What do I need to know in order to discern the true from the false?

Venus:

On November 7th Venus changes signs from her home-turf of Libra into the deep waters of Scorpio. All of a sudden love relationships, partnerships, even friendships reach a new level of intimacy and any place where those relationships refuse to go deeper is a place where we might see them break off and apart completely. This is a wonderful sign change for those who crave more or deeper intimacy and a tricky sign change for anyone who wants to stay in shallow, superficial waters.
Ask: What does deep love look like and feel like to me right now?

Venus and Neptune trine together on November 16th that supports fantasy, art, beauty, and romance with a capital R. The last time this trine occured was on August 12th so refer back to your notes from that period to see how it showed up in your life. If relationship stuff came up for you then, it may make a re-appearance now.
Ask: What is my intuition telling me about my relationship with (fill in the blank)?

Mars:

Mars and Pluto square off on November 19th and this is a time and aspect to pay attention to. These two power houses speak to discipline and also risk. Use their celestial tension to help you assess risk with clear-eyed vision and also to cultivate the discipline that allows you to take risk and experience great reward.
Ask: Where, and why, am I willing to risk it all?

Jupiter:

Lucky November 13th features a conjunction between Jupiter and Venus in Scorpio. This is a prime time to make or renew vows or promises and to set aside some time for your significant other. Venus and Jupiter in Scorpio can also herald awesome money moves, new investment opportunities, and energetically allows you to bless the financial sector of your life.
Ask: What blessing around love and/or money would I especially like to receive right now?

Saturn:

A Saturn and Uranus trine on November 11th ushers in Veteran’s Day in the US. This is an epic meeting of the ancient past (Saturn) with the radical future (Uranus). On a global level we might see some important new innovations in tech make themselves know at this time. Personally it is a time to reflect on how ancient virtues (like the willingness to sacrifice one’s life for one’s country) can support and enrich new possibilities (like gene therapies that can prevent life threatening disease). They may not seem immediately related, but they are. This is the last trine between these two planets that we will see until 2037.
Ask: How does my past inform my vision of the future?

On November 28th there is a conjunction between Saturn and Mercury. This heavenly meet up can often make us feel a little sad, melancholy, and fatalistic. But it can also be a great time to explore and think about areas that are hard or difficult for you and a good time to get legal affairs in order or pay attention to legal concerns. Its the kind of day to use your worst case expectation to up the ante on your insurance policy or create a Will.
Ask: What detail work do I need to apply myself to?

Uranus:

November 4th features an opposition between rock n roll Uranus and lovely and loving Venus. This aspect can challenge stable, romantic, relationships but it can also be channeled into doing something spontaneous and fun – road trips or pop up date nights are very much encouraged!
Ask: Where does my love life and partnerships need to be shaken up and thrilled?

November 25th features a trine between Uranus and Mercury just daring you to access your most brilliant ideas, think outside the box, and do something unexpected.
Ask: What brilliance am I holding right now?

Neptune:

On November 3rd we have a Neptune – Sun trine that can illuminate our next artistic vision, our intuitive knowing, and remind us that we are all in this together. This trine can also bring up deep and possibly sentimental emotions – those of you doing Ancestor work around this time should especially expect to be affected. The last time this trine occured was on 7/5 so check your notes from that day to see how things were feeling.
Ask: What mystical vision am I ready to fully illuminate?

On November 22nd the long Neptune retrograde finally comes to a halt and Neptune is moving in the right direction once more. Those of us who have an affinity with the watery planet (that is Pisces, Pisces at the Ascendant, Pisces Moon, or Pisces at any of the compass points) will feel this as a lightening and road opening experience.
Ask: What dream am I ready to believe in once more?

Pluto:

Jupiter in Scorpio: Go Deep or Go Home

Divination and Dreams

S

o as some of you may know, Jupiter, THE planet of blessing, abundance, sovereignty, and wisdom moved into the sign of Scorpio today.

Just as was the case with Jupiter in Libra, you do not need to know anything about your personal natal chart to start to appreciate and take advantage of the depth here.

What you do need to understand is that Jupiter is a strongly felt cosmic presence – in fact, it is the only planet in our solar system that sends out more energy than it takes in, thus making the ancient affiliation between Jupiter and generosity absolutely on point.

Like all of the planets, over time, Jupiter makes its way through the entire zodiacal wheel. The last time it was in Scorpio was 2005 so one way to begin thinking about what this period might bring is to reflect on what you discovered or realized or dredged up back then.

As we have already established, Jupiter is the planet of greatest abundance and Scorpio the 8th sign of the zodiac is the sign associated with sex, power, death, magic, money, investments, crime, and passion – so you know, nothing too intense. Scorpio is the sign of the Sacred Arts and it is also the sign of your scars and your struggles – if you want to understand any of the above better go to Scorpio.

At the very outset we can say that Jupiter is going to energize all of these areas in our world, period. For those of you who do know your personal charts, look to see what is happening in Scorpio and your 8th house – that will start to give you an idea of how Jupiter will work for you.

PS: if you want to learn more about astrology and specifically about Jupiter in Scorpio then join my forever astro class: Star Magic.

Let’s begin with the dates:

10/10/17 – Jupiter enters Scorpio at 8:20am cdt

3/8/18 – 7/10/18 Jupiter will be Retrograde. Retrograde starts at 10:45pm in Scorpio and ends on 7/10 at 12:02pm.

11/8/18 – Jupiter moves into its happy home turf of Sagittarius

As you can see from early March through early July in 2018 Jupiter will be retrograde. Typically we do not feel the retrograde motions of the outer planets as intensely as we do the inner planets like famous Mercury or even Mars or Venus. However, the retrograde motions of outer planets give us time and scope to really do a thorough review along the lines of a particular theme.

As longtime readers know, my approach to astrology is decidedly Socratic – I am not really interested in making generalized predictions, I am so much more interested in your unique understanding and relationship to the skies and stars. And the best way to get to know that relationship? Through asking and answering questions of course!

Let’s start with these

1.) What are the struggles I am currently engaged in and what happens when they become blessed? What happens when you stop seeing your struggles as have-to’s and instead see them as gifts and opportunities? What wisdom have you gained through your struggles? What blessings have you found in your broken places?

2.) Where do I need more power in my life and what can I do to cultivate it?

3.) What financial blessings am I open and and ready to receive? What financial teachings am I in need of right now?

4.) What is my relationship to other people’s money?

5.) What is the role that sex and lovemaking currently play in my life?

6.) What is a wound around sex, sexuality, love-making, and passionate intensity that I am ready to acknowledge and heal?

7.) What secrets am I no longer willing to hold in silence and what secrets am I ready to hear?

8.) Where could I benefit from more rigor, discipline, and depth?

9.) What does my anger and rage teach me?

10.) What is my magic?

11.) How might I deepen and broaden my current Sacred Arts practices?

12.) Where am I ready for more intensity?

13.) What would Jupiter in Scorpio like me to focus on over the next year?

Now every transit, no matter how lovely, has its shadow side. Here is my list of DON’T’s for Jupiter in Scorpio and they apply to all.

Don’t get addicted. To money, sex, power, drugs, alcohol, or other illicit substances. Struggle is hard and it is part of Scorpio’s story; addiction is how we tune struggle out – obviously it does not work long term and Scorpio is very much about long term investments and gains.

Don’t ignore your yearnings around magic and the Sacred Arts – the esoteric subjects belong to Scorpio so when Jupiter is in this sign we all feel our inner witch, wizard, priest and priestess come close to the surface – don’t shove these spiritual yearnings down to the bottom of your priority list.

Don’t accept stuck situations of any kind. Scorpio’s work involves movement and evolution, not being mired in waste and filth, keep swimming no matter how deep the waters might get.

Don’t give into rage, anger, or bitterness. Acknowledge those feelings. Work with them. Accept that they are part, but not the whole, of your story.

Don’t get reckless with financial or legal matters.

Don’t stay in the Underworld 24/7, the hardest part of the mythology of Scorpio is not the descent, but the ascent, find the medicine and apply it right here, right now.

Take the questions and the Don’t guidelines as springboards for yourself. Think about your own life and make this process your own. It is cosmic and vast but it is also highly relational so get into a relationship with it. Remember too that Jupiter is above and beyond everything else the Guru wise teacher – the opportunity to dance with your shadows and find treasure in the depths is full on right now; it is truly time to go deep or go home.

Astro Rx 2018

Sacred Arts

M

Miracles — Let us discover what is happening in the heavens so that we might be fully rooted here in this gorgeous earth.

In this post we will go through the various phases of the moon, briefly look at what each of the planets will be up to in 2018, and of course I will give you pertinent retrograde dates and eclipse dates as well.

Or better yet, hop over here and purchase the 2018 Sacred Arts Book of Hours – it contains ALL of the essential astro dates, gorgeous art by Cassandra, and beautiful lines for you to write your notes in. If you are looking for a planner and calendar to keep your Sacred Arts mojo straight then this is IT! Best part? It is $24 – for real.

Balsamic or Dark Moons are traditionally times to rest, fast, dream deeply, and banish anything that is no longer relevant and/or of use to you.

Below are the lunar phases for 2018 in central time. If you need help with timezone conversation go here.

And, if you want a specialized report on how each of these moons will affect you and play out in your personal natal chart and star-scape, you might want to check out my latest Astro RX Special Report: I See the Moon.

Lunar and Solar Eclipses in 2018

There are five eclipses in 2018.

1/31: Total Lunar Eclipse at 11 degrees Leo at 7:27am
Ask: What is one pattern, attitude, and/or belief I no longer wish to follow when it comes to expressing my feelings and how can I reverse it today?

2/15: Partial Solar Eclipse at 27 degrees Aquarius at 3:05 PM
Ask: What is one pattern, attitude, and/or belief I no longer wish to follow when it comes to broadcasting my message and how can I reverse it today?

7/12: Partial Solar Eclipse at 20 degrees Cancer at 9:48 PM
Ask: What is one pattern, attitude, and/or belief I no longer wish to follow when it comes to home and tribe and how can I reverse it today?

7/27: Total Lunar Eclipse at 4 degrees Aquarius at 3:20 PM
Ask: What is one pattern, attitude, and/or belief I no longer wish to follow when it comes to creating and/or participating in community and how can I reverse it today?

8/11: Partial Solar Eclipse at 18 degrees Leo at 4:58 AM
Ask: What is one pattern, attitude, and/or belief around being seen and beloved that I no longer wish to be influenced by and how can I reversed it today?

First we will spend some time with some of the inner planet happenings in 2017, starting with the ever dreaded Mercury retrogrades.

Mercury Retrogrades for 2018

Here are the dates for the 2018 Mercury Retrogrades:
March 22, 2018 – April 15, 2018: Retrograde starts at 7:19pm in Aries, ending on 4/15 at 4:21am.
Ask: What risks need to be re-assessed? What is my current relationship to health and fitness?
How many projects have I started without finishing and can I finish them or remove them completely?

July 26, 2018 – August 18, 2018: Retrograde starts at 12:02am in Leo, ending on 8/18 at 11:25pm.
Ask: Where are things too high-maintenance? What is my current relationship to voice and expression? Where do I need a performance evaluation?

November 16, 2018 – December 6, 2018: Retrograde starts at 7:33pm in Sagittarius and moves into Scorpio on 12/1, ending on 12/6 at 6:29am.
Ask: Where have I become too rigid in my personal philosophy and/or spiritual outlook? What relationships to Mystery and the Unseen need to be tended at this time?

Mercury, Venus, and Mars

These three inner planets move through the sky and around the zodiac relatively quickly. In 2016 we saw Mars spend an inordinate amount of time in Scorpio and Sagittarius, due to a lengthy Mars retrograde.
We have already gone over the Mercury retrograde dates so now we have to turn our attention to another long retrograde period we will experience in 2018 – Venus retrograde. Here is the info on that:

October 5, 2018 – November 16, 2018: Retrograde starts at 2:04pm in Scorpio, moving into Libra on 10/31, ending on 11/16 at 4:51am.
Ask: What is the role that love plays in my life? What do I love? Who do I love? Where can I love more and can I accept love from others? What has sex taught me about love and what has love taught me about sex?

Then we have the fiery planet Mars who also retrogrades this year:
June 26, 2018 – August 27, 2018: Retrograde starts at 6:26pm in Aquarius, moving into Capricorn on 8/12, ending on 8/27 at 9:05am.
Ask: Where have I allowed my passion and my convictions to get in the way of accomplishing my goals? Where has anger taken me off message and off point? Where have I become too indolent and lazy? What would happen if I applied more discipline to the areas of work and community?

Jupiter in Scorpio + Sagittarius

For most of 2018 Jupiter is in the sign of Scorpio and then in November it will move into its home turf of Sagittarius. Jupiter in Scorpio encourages us to find treasure in the hidden, dark, mysterious places of our psychic soul soils. The planet in this sign is great for all Sacred Arts endeavors, magic-making, deepening of intimacy and relationships, and amazing sex. This is also a great time to do estate planning, financial investments, and deal with any legal issues that might crop up.

October 10, 2017 – November 8, 2018: Jupiter is in the sign of Scorpio.
Ask: Where do I find treasure in the Unseen? What do my dreams and intuitions tell me about real prosperity? What spiritual beliefs and practices support my sovereignty? What are the blessings pouring out from my broken places? What has been my curse and what will be the cure?

During its course through Scorpio, Jupiter will trine with Neptune (in Pisces) three times over the next year. The first trine is in December, the second in April, and the final trine in September. Remember that the aspect of trine is astro-speak for “open for business” and Jupiter and Neptune are two kingly rulers – one’s domain is the good, green, earth, and the other’s is the depths of ocean and sea. This entire relationship is governed by the element of Water so Scorpios and Pisces or those with Scorpio and/or Pisces prevalent in their chart should expect an especially auspicious year.

There is a Jupiter Retrograde in 2018 as well.
March 8, 2018 – July 10, 2018 Retrograde starts at 10:45pm in Scorpio and ends on 7/10 at 12:02pm.
Ask: Where am I too invested in a relationship, partnership, or romantic experience? Where do I need to exercise more self-control? Where have I let past decisions determine too much of my present and future experiences?

Jupiter moves into the sign of Sagittarius.
November 8, 2018 – December 2, 2019: Jupiter moves into its happy place with the celestial Archer.
Ask: What makes me feel free? Where do freedom and abundance show up in my life? How do they relate to each other? What uncharted territory am I ready to explore?

Saturn in Capricorn

For all of 2018 Saturn continues a long and slow transit through its favored sign of Capricorn. Saturn moves into Cappy on December 19, 2017 and will be in Capricorn for about 2.5 years. If you have been paying attention you know that Pluto is also in Capricorn throughout 2018. Either planet by itself packs an incredible punch but both of them together is something fierce.

Ask: Where am I ready to gain mastery, experience, and cultivate true excellence?

There is a Saturn Retrograde in 2018 in the sign of Capricorn.
April 17, 2018 – September 6, 2018: Retrograde starts at 8:47pm in Capricorn, ending on 9/6 at 6:09am.
Ask: Where does my public presence and image need to be reviewed, re-assessed, and re-fined?

Neptune in Pisces

Neptune continues moving through the sign of Pisces, giving us plenty of deep ocean to swim around in and go diving for treasure. With the intensity of Saturn and Pluto in Capricorn, and the unbridled excitement of Uranus in Aries for most of 2018, it is so nice to have Neptune hanging out in its most favorite sign. However, there will be a Neptune Retrograde in 2017 too.
June 18, 2018 – November 24, 2018: Neptune Retrograde in Pisces. Retrograde starts at 6:26pm and concludes on 11/24 at 7:08pm
Ask: What unfinished creative/dream work do I need to turn my attention to now? What unhelpful fantasy needs to be revised and made relevant?

Uranus in Aries, Taurus, and Aries

In May of 2018 Uranus will change signs, leaving the fiery Ram of Aries and moving into the stable territory of Taurus the Bull. This is a seven year cycle that is going to shake up our most solid institutions and assumptions in both the personal and global spheres.
There will be a Uranus retrograde in 2018. The ground will be shifting but remember, you still have the capacity to ride those waves and ripples and call forth your capacity for visionary brilliance.

May 15th: Uranus leaves Aries and enters Taurus at 10:16am
Ask: How do I best navigate shifting ground?

August 7, 2018 – January 6, 2019: Uranus Retrograde in Taurus and Aries. Retrograde begins at 11:48am in Taurus, moving into Aries on 11/6 and ending on 1/6/19 at 2:27pm.

Ask: Why do I do the kind of work that I do?

There is a Pluto Retrograde in 2018.
April 22, 2018 – September 30, 2018: Pluto is retrograde in Capricorn. Retrograde begins at 10:26am and ends on 9/30 at 9:03pm.
Ask: Where have I given up and given over my power and what do I need to do in order to get it back?
